What makes this Tank interesting is its crude method of steering. The wheeled appendage attached to the rear of early models of the Mark I (steering tail) was intended to help with modest turns; the driver could turn the trailing wheels, using them like a rudder to influence the direction of the tank.
Larger turns demanded manipulation of the tank’s treads. Tracks cannot be rotated on the horizontal plane in the way that a car’s wheels can be steered. Instead, tracked vehicles were turned using an early form of “skid steer.” This technique essentially spins the tank. Skid steer, used with tracked vehicles even today, can be achieved in various ways: by braking the tracks on one side entirely while powering the other side or by shifting the gears for one side into neutral. Other methods entail setting one set of tracks into reverse while the other runs forward or increasing the speed on one side while slowing down the other.

The steering tail was ditched after the MkI as it was more a hinderance than a help as once damaged it was totally useless and could actually cause the tank to get stuck if it wasn't raised.

This is awesome guys, it's a really interesting bit of background on this tank. Thanks!

If you ever get a chance to go Bovington tank museum make sure you have a look inside one of the ww1 tanks.

It's a real eye opener how cramped and noisy they would of been.

When I was on a tank experience day one of the curators told us that orders were given by hitting the hull with a wrench.

The paint arrived the other day and being as I had the airbrush out for the Jeep I got the pre shade and first colour down. There are 4 colours on this scheme plus a black outline so the next colours will be brushed on. They will be light coats to keep the weathered look.

Lovely work as always Daran and your paintwork is faultless as I've come to expect from you. I love your pre-shading which looks perfectly rendered - well done mate!!

Hello Kev, thanks for your comment. I have left quite a bit of the preshade showing due to the four other colours that are in this paint scheme. It should come down to a natural more level.

Looks good.

Nice to see the paintwork developing rather than just the finished item.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I always like to show each stage Derek, it gives an idea of the work involved and also may help others paint theirs. Everyone has their own way of doing things.

On with the camo! I drew the outline on with a sharpie and the paint between them, I want a rough hand painted finish as I very much doubt they had a compressor and spray gun during the Somme!!

And very nice it all looks i must say.

Love the colours as well on these ww1 items. I guess some place yyou could read up on the colours used but that "plum" colour is great and similar colours on ww1 german aircraft intrigue me in that after the war those sort of colour schemes were never used again.

Top job your doing with this one and very interesting to see.
Happy Modelling
