The British Army’s bloodiest day is to be commemorated with special edition poppies made from brass shell fuses fired during the Battle of the Somme and earth from the battlefield. The collector’s items have been produced for the Royal British Legion to mark the centenary of the first day of the Somme on July 1.
In all, 19,240 pins are being made – one for every soldier killed on the first day of the battle, which saw the heaviest loss of life in British military history for a single day’s fighting.
