I'm not really into trains but thought it would be interesting to try something different and this does look like it would be a cool looking display piece. If is still on the fence with this take advantage of the special introductory offer that is currently on. After receiving the first pack I was very impressed with the parts, with everything being metal this is going to be a heavy model when its finished. The instructions calls for instant glue in a lot of places. I have decided to use UniBond Repair Extreme Power Glue for everything that needs to be glued on this kit as Ive used this in the past and found it to be a long lasting strong glue. The build starts off assembling the number plate for the smokebox door. You get a handy little jig to get the spacing correct. The door is then glues to the hinges on the front plate and will be able to open and closed when finished. Assembling the smokebox I found quite troublesome, this was mainly my fault as I wasn't patient enough. In the end I ended up shearing the screws off and scratching the paintwork. Yeah great start!! Luckily this is on an introductory offer so I ordered it again, twice!! Must remember to cancel the extra two subscriptions. We also assemble the first set of driving wheels, the wheels really give you an idea of big this thing is going to be. Pack 1 was completed by assembling the chimney, spark arrester and blast pipe which sits inside the smokebox. I'm really enjoying this build so far and really glad I decided to go for it. davetwin attached the following image(s):

Thank you all for stopping by and making a comment. It would be really great to see some more of these on the go, they really are a fantastic kit. I'm enjoying building so much more than I expected. Pack 2 Stage 05 - 08 We start by fitting the front deck base at the bottom of the smokebox. This is secured in place with some glue and screws. We then move onto to assembling the feedwater system which start with the heater. You need to pay attention to which end is which so you get the ends on the correct side, these are secured in place with glue. Once assembled the holder is placed over the heater and the bands bent around it and through the holes in the front deck. I then bent the small bit of band poking through the bottom of the deck to keep them securely in place. More screws are used to finish this off. There is a really great tip in the instructions, by simply wrapping some insulation tape around the shaft of your screwdriver you then give yourself a little shield to help stop from scratching any paint. So simple but effective!! We now finish off by sticking the plates in place on top of the holder. Next is the release leaver. Care is needed when doing this as its easy to put the release leavers onto the bar the incorrect way round, yes I did! Once all are in place they are then glued to the front beam. Now the inspection lids are assembled which is just a case of gluing some steps onto the lid. The parts are fantastic, with the pattern printed on really setting them off. Before we attach the inspection lids parts left over from previous stages are attached. Firstly the front upper deck, the beam is then added to this followed now by the inspection pits. This is then finished off with the white deck sides adding a nice bit of colour. You might see some metal showing around some of the screws, this is where I tighten the screws and the paint bubbled up a bit. Unfortunately this is unavoidable but can be simply touched up with paint. Andy posted in the official build that Vallejo Model Colour 70.950 black is a good match. I tried this with various other blacks I had on a scrap part and have to agree 100%, I couldn't get a better match davetwin attached the following image(s):

Pack 02 Stages 09 - 12 We start this stage by putting together the steps that go either side at the front and then attaching them. The two grab handle bars are then glued to either side on the front. The air hose is then attached to the front beam. At this stage you will need something to sit the assembly on to avoid damaging the air hose. We now move onto the building the underframe, this is going to be rather heavy if it continues with all these metal parts. Not much to this, just attach the brake supports and then a attaching a brace. Another part of underframe is then added to the front as well as the truck support and smoke chamber support, again all metal.# Next step is the cylinder plates. This is a simple case of gluing the cylinder covers on to the rear plate. You put a screw in place first which matches a hole on the plate, this is just used to help get the correct orientation of the plate, its then removed. The cylinder front plates, or the ears, as they look when first attached, attached to the frame followed by the rear plates. davetwin attached the following image(s):

Pack 3 Stages 13 - 16 We start by attaching the cylinder safety valves into the cylinder covers followed by attaching the motion bars into place. Once this is done we move on to assembly of the piston valve tail guides, this calls for using a synthetic rubber glue however I used the General purpose power glue that I have used for the rest of the build so far. Next we assemble the pistons that go at the front, this is a simple case of gluing the piston rods into the piston rod housing and gluing to the piston cover after its been stuck to the frame. The cylinder side plates come next which involves sticking all the detail onto the side plates, again I used the same glue as I previously used. Once all the parts are stuck to the plate the assembly is screwed to the frame. Finally we assemble the crossheads. davetwin attached the following image(s):

Pack 3 Stages 17 - 20 We start by extending the underframe even more, its getting quite large now followed by attaching the end plate. Next we make up the motion frame and attach this to the underframe followed by attaching the equalising bars and bracket to the motion frame, be sure you have the bars the correct way up. I cant tell you exactly how heavy this is now but it is quite substantial, most of the parts so far are metal. davetwin attached the following image(s):
