A subject that is very noticeable is the amount of times the question of whether or not there is a real requirement to use build jigs or dry docks in ship building, this question appears to come mostly from those who are new to the art of ship building. The idea behind this topic is to give some clear information and guidance on keel jigs, why are they needed, materials to use, how to build, types of jigs available, etc. I know there is quite a lot of information already on the forum but thought it would be good if this information could be made available under this one topic making it a point of reference for all those looking for guidance. The next item in this topic is a jig suitable for keels that have tabs extending from the bottom of the keel such as the Soleil Royal, Santisma Trinidad and San Francisco II to name a few. This item is an addition to the Jigs outlined in posts 1 & 2 above. A simple addition that goes a long way in ensuring ribs being fitted are square and true to the keel, an essential part in all ship builds. Very easy to construct. Next item we look at are slips/jigs that are commercially available for those that do not wish to build their own and are happy to part with some hard earned cash. The first one is from Hobby Zone: HZ-PSM1 - PROFESSIONAL BUILDING SLIPThis kit will take a keel length of up to 100cm and also allows the ship to be rotated around 360 degrees with removing from the jig, making planking easier. Another commercially available slip/jig is the Model Shipways Fair-a-Frame. This again requires construction and has two parallel bars running along the base making it ideal for both straight and tabbed keels. It's also a little easier on the wallet... Another commercially available jig is from Billings Boats, the Billing Boats Building Slip B397. Suitable for keels up to a length of 90cm, also has a guide for ensuring ribs are fitted square to the keel. The next item I'd like to highlight under this topic is Build Clamps. This very nice build clamp is available through ModelSpace. You can use for San Felipe, Soleil Royal and Santisima Trinidad scale model. Works well for any keel that has tabs.

Another very nice item that may be of interest is the Portable Workstation from Artesania Latina. This is especially useful for those that may be limited for space in the work area and is very easily assembled. It doesn't clamp anything in place so isn't a suitable item for ensuring keel's or ribs are correctly aligned but it has a very useful detachable cradle for your ship, enabling you to work on your model knowing it is secure. Alan, very interesting article you have put together. One thing I would say with the "Fair-a-Frame" and to some degree the Billings "Building Slip" is that they are like mini kits in their own right and have numerous parts that need cutting to size and putting together. Anyone thinking of buying and maybe not sure let me know and I can post some in box pictures of the component parts if required. Another item I would like to add is this one: MANTUA STRIP CLAMP AND HULL HOLDERThis item is made of a hard plastic (described by the manufacture as "Fibre Glass reinforced Nylon". It is a sturdy piece of kit in all fairness. I have used it mainly for its primary purpose and that is to hold strip wood to all sanding or planning of the planks that need to be tapered. It is also claimed you can use it as a Hull Clamp but this would only really work I think if you have a kit that has those extending tabs along the bottom of the false keel or the ribs do not reach right to the bottom of the false keel. To keep the item fixed safe and sound to your workbench it comes with a metal "G" clamp and the whole setup seems to perform well. Instructions for the item are in several languages and are printed on the 4 sides of the box. It does not come with any individual instruction leaflet but being a fairly simple device it does not really need to. the width of the unit is around 12 inches and as to weight it’s just over 1lb 1 5/8 oz. (499 grams) Hope the set of pictures that follow show the item in better detail. I am sure there are many suppliers that may stock this item. I have one of of these clamps and like yourself have never used it as a hull clamp but have found it very useful for planing and sanding hull planks especially when planing long angles on stealers.

Graeme Graeme I agree it is very good for that. I had tried to do things on the cheap and use a couple of aluminium angles but trying to jiggle with those at the same time as getting the planks in and tightening up the vice it was hopeless. This little device makes that task so much easier. Happy Modelling

This is a great topic, I have to say I cannot speak highly enough of this product. its multi positional and comes with clamps for your work desk. its a great hands free for planking a hulls or decks and even structural building. the two clamps can actually be used as individual mini Vices. it will also hold masts and spars when building these up. its one of the best Ship building tools i have ever purchased. http://www.cornwallmodel...catalog/amati_7382.html
