After looking through other build diaries, I decided to paint the cylinder/underframe assembly before the suspension and other details were added. I followed the following process, which seemed to work fine on the front steps: A soak in Simple Green for de-grease, followed by a vinegar bath to help paint adhesion and then air dry. What I found looks like the screws rusted, causing stains around each screw hole. By removing each screw I am able to remove the stains, but I wonder what I did wrong.

If your vinegar solution was with water then air drying it will have caused oxidation, hence the rust. I always use a blower with my compressor to dry or even a hair dryer.

The de-grease removed the grease and the lacquer from the screws this allowed the vinegar which is a mild acid to attack the screws causing the rust to form. You may now need to seal the screws to prevent the rust returning under the paint job by using a rust eater solution like they use on automotives Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
