The additional deck elements are noted to be varnished later in the instructions and certainly in the official build

Update from the building balcony. Reached phase 25, made some grating and instaled the first gun port templates. The walnut (?) for the grating frames needs to be cut very carefully, as is wont for hardwood it likes to break along the "year rings". Easily remedied by just supergluing the pieces together again. After sanding and varnishing the break becomes completely invisible. Not a major issue, just something to look out for if it happens to you. The material for the planks is the best I've seen yet in any kit. It bends easily by hand and the knife goes through it like butter. This is going to be immensely helpful when it's time to cut gun ports. Love it.

Great update and pictures Greyhawk. Everything looks so neat and tidy and despite how hard I look I can't see where you had the issue with the wood splitting

I can't find it myself even though I know where it is. That's the neat thing about this wood. Glueing sanding and varnishing makes the break disappear entirely.

Thanks everyone. Went ahead up to issue 35 and with this we've reached the 25 percent point (going by pure building phases alone). So far no major issues, I had to rip out one of the planks on the starboard side and install a modified one to get the middle upper gun port fret to fit, but that was due to me installing the plank badly originally. All the openings in the decks are now closed which instantly gives the ship a much nicer look. Balcony is no longer a workspace option now, I'm afraid.

Looking really nice there Greyhawk. Sorry to hear about the balcony.I guess you couldnt build it at work because of the sawdust.
I took parts of my time machine to work so I could sand the resin parts.my staff was thrilled by all the fine white dust I left all over my desk.tee hee.

Funny you should mention that. I have actually started building this little beauty at work just this week. Shouldn't produce too much sawdust. Build report will be incoming after I've finished step one, which at current speed will take a few weeks still. How far I am so far.
