Hi All

I well remember my visit to RAF Waddington when I took a group of grammar school boys to visit when I was a Careers Teacher.BigGrin We were taken to the control tower just as dusk was falling on the airfield. A Vulcan bomber on a night training run did a landing and immediate take-off down the main runway. The sound and the sight of the flare from the engines in the semi-dark was something I shall always remember.Blink

The following day we were shown round the maintenance hangar and had an opportunity to go up into the pilots' position. The space was tiny compared with the size of the aircraft.

They had no ejector seats, instead in an emergency their seats tipped backwards and they would have had to somersault backwards out through escape hatches in the floor before deploying parachutes.Blink Blink

All in all, it was a remarkable couple of days.

Waddington dates this year are the 2nd & 3rd July, all being well Vulcan will be doing her thing!

Anyone who has not seen this remarkable aircraft in flight should do so while you can!

The Vulcan is an astounding aircraft along with the Victor, I have been a great fan of the Vulcan for many years, even donated a few quid towards the fund to get her restored and back into the air..Historic aircraft like her should be preserved for posterity, not only as a piece of military memorabilia but a brilliant piece of British designer-ship...

Hi

I saw the Vulcan many times, and remember greatly its last flight...(not this time round).. I only live 1/2 mile away from Woodford Aerospace( sadly closing this year) where they were all made... I sat in a cockpit of one when I was small.

Most amazing aircraft,,proper noise at airshows when all the car alarms go off...Lol

There is only one other aircraft that makes my hairs stand, its the sound of a Spitfire.. Wow that is an amazing sound..

Waddington has also got the USAF Thunderbirds again .. I saw them in 2001 there, that was the last time they flew in this country.. Brill display team..

Chris.

Yep.. I also remember the last flight of the Shackleton.. I was in school and three of them flew over the playing field, One had a red nose painted on the front for comic relief..

The Vulcan sure is an iconic plane. Many years ago I was at a model airshow on an RAF base (Bicester?) and a Vulcan was on the hard standing with no security at all. I think they were converting her to a tanker. I photographed every square inch of it so that I could build that R/c model which would look good as a static on the dining room table as well, don't you think TomickLOL

The vulcan is an amazing aircraft and i had the privalage to see the plane in its reconstuction stage as my nephew is in the RAF and it was part of his training to help with the wiring on her.
So glad they managed to raise all the funds for her it was a bit dicey at times.
Builds in progress: HMS Victory.HMS Surprise.

It displaying in long term is pretty uncertain, ongoing funding is needed where its needs around 600k a year just to meet fuel and insurance costs, and currently 200k needs to be found by the end of April and another 150k by the end of May, where its future displays are very dependent on reaching the funding targets from year to year.

Following XH558's arrival at Doncaster's 'Robin Hood Airport' a couple of weeks ago, an interim viewing gallery has been located within the terminal building for the period of Good Friday 22nd April to Monday 2nd May.
Visitors will be able to see her parked on a stand outside the gallery, take photographs and try the flight simulator.

The Viewing Gallery will be open 11am – 4pm, simply follow the signs to the upper level, pass the Robin Hood statue, bearing left into the reception area.
