BigGrin Hi all

1.15 am 1st Jan 2017Woot Woot Woot Woot and my build on the Cobra can finally start good luck to everyone that is doing a build this year but first a little history. Also if you didnt know it the Cobra Mustang GT500 we are building as a kit on the forum is the 1967 upgraded street version of the 1966 mustang GT350 that traveled with the caravan.

The Shelby Cobra was based on the British AC Cobra but Shelby had the chassis modified to take the big eight cylinder Ford engine in this guise it won over and over again in the USA but when he took his Cobra's to Europe he found the car was outclassed by Ferrari and other European cars on the long straights. Shelby decided to come back with a better car. One of his designers had been studying German aerodynamics and he designed the Daytona Coupe this car stormed through the 1965 season winning the world sports car class 19 points ahead of the field.

At this time Ford were injecting a great deal of cash into Shelby motors so to help push sales and celebrate the win Shelby went on a tour of America in a large truck that could hold four cars these cars were:-

Shelby Cobra

GT40

Daytona Coupe

Ford Cobra Mustang

This collection of cars was soon nicknamed the Cobra Caravan and would and could be at your local Ford dealership, there are story's of buyers collecting there Mustangs and having Carol Shelby hand them there keys.

Tracing the cars from the caravan is not easy as there were around 25 Shelby Cobras used on the caravan that year one even stared in a film called 'Spinout' with Elvis. This car is on display at the Hollywood Casino. Again It was a case of taking whatever was not racing that week on the tour.

http://www.hollywoodcasi....com/Casino/Memorabilia

The GT40's were the car Ford wanted Shelby to develop to win the 24 Le Mans race and it did with flying colours only 130 were built and its a case of taking whatever wasnt racing that week on the tour. All the cars are known and any could have been used on the tour.

Only 6 Daytona coupe's were built and only one was used on the tour this car disappeared for around 30 years and I have added a link below that tells its story and the sad end of an owner.

https://jimsgarage.wordp...-daytona-coupe-mystery/

The Cobra Mustang was Shelbys souped up muscle car that was raced, Ford preparing 36 competition models for this and was on the tour to help push sales of the street version. There are some survivors one being in the link below :-

http://www.mustangandfor...ford-1965-shelby-gt350/

Some interesting story's on some of the cars and they say today that one of the reasons we have speed limits on our roads was because of the Shelby AC Cobra's that were tearing up the A1 and M1 motorways at the time leaving the police standing in there Ford Cortina patrol cars.

Will be posting an update as soon as I start some construction.

Did you decide on a color? I know blue with white stripes is common but I have always been partial to yellow.

BigGrin Hi MM

I will be building the #98 street version that is blue with white stripes but I will be using Zero paints Guardsman Blue metalic flake paint this paint has been formulated from the original paint chips as far as I am aware.

The colour is mid blue metalic and not the dark blues usually depicted but as most pictures from the sixtys were monochrome its hard to see the true colour of the vehicle.

BigGrin Hi All

We start the build with the 8 cylinder engine the main block is a white resin/polymer casting that has soft white metal castings attached to add the major detail.

The main block is a sweet casting that only needed a minimal general clean up, as for the metal castings again just some general tidying up of the minimal casting burs and by burrs I mean a thin line that is easily removed. Once the basic engine block was assembled I moved on to the gearbox and assembled the basic gearbox parts ready for undercoating and top coat along with the engine block.

More soon.

Andy

Greta start Andy,
I have seen quite a few 427 replicas on the streets in USA. Most were guardsman blue, but I have seen a red one and a white one too.I am not sure what chassis is used, but the distinctive body shape and sound from the exhaust really gets your attention.

Nice Start Andy.
Funny really, I had only just watched The Grand Tour, and that episode was all about the GT40, Shelby and the 24 Le Mans race, and how Henry Ford 2nd nearly bought Ferrari. very interesting.
Great colour choice, will be following your build with interest.
