Hello all,

Right then, here we go with my first update on the actual building work!!

I have decided I am going to do this diary slightly different to my previous ones, by having less text between the photos. Where necessary I will add text between them but most of the photos will have text and markers inserted to indicate what has been done at each stage. Where no text is added to a photo they will just be to show a general view of any work completed. Any holes drilled will be indicated in yellow in the photos. The penny shots show just how small this thing is ... and I have an awful lot of tiny parts to add to this engine!!

Photos 1-10 below show the basic parts needed at this point for the construction of the engine, transmission and rear suspension and the modifications I need to make to them. Photos 11-19 show the various resin and etch replacement parts for the rear suspension trailing arm pick-up points along with various scratchbuilt detail parts.

The topmost section of the gearbox/transmission hasn't been glued in place yet as I'll need to remove it to add the top wishbones and fittings at a later date. It will be primed and painted at the same time as the rest of it, then the joints just filled and touched up. It's just easier that way!! Some of the joints look a little messy at the moment but that is just where they have had Mr Surfacer 500 added then been cleaned up. It'll all disappear under a coat of primer. Some of the joints on this kit are really bad, not at all like modern Tamiya kits, but this is a re-release of quite an old kit from the '80s and it is starting to show it's age a bit now!!

Thanks for looking, all comments and constructive criticisms welcomed. Cool ThumpUp

Good start Kev. This build is going to have some unbelievably small details Cool .
I see that you've added some scratchbuilt pieces. Are you detailing even more than the Top Studio kit provides !!! Fantastic !
Now that I'm near the end of my "standard" kit build I'm going to be glued to this one. ( no pun intended BigGrin )

Great work Kev, and nice to see your build underway. The penny shot certainly gives a perspective on the size of the parts, my eyes would have left home by now!LOL BigGrin

@ Malc - Yeah, just adding a few more details that I've noticed from the photos in my MFH Photo Reference book which aren't included in the kit or the upgrade set. There is one glaring omission from both that I just can't believe wasn't spotted by 'Top Studio' and which I would have expected to be included in their set since it's not in the standard kit.

As you're building the standard kit Malc, can you guess what it might be? A clue: the car wouldn't get very far without it!! Huh Blink BigGrin

Hi Kev,

oh ... now you've set me a challenge.BigGrin I shall continue to look for the missing item. The only thing that I've noticed the absence of is the Battery? but I thought that it's hidden away somewhere inside the bodywork and not modeled as a result? if that's not the item, I shall keep looking.Cool

@ Malc - Sorry mate, it's not the battery and you're right, it would be hidden anyway. Keep trying, if you get really stuck I'll offer another clue but not yet!? Flapper Cool ThumpUp

Hi Kev.

You are off to a great start with this build. I have this kit and the Top Studio pack and made a start some time ago. I just have not managed to complete the engine detail, so looking forward to watching your progress. The Top Studio pack certainly contains a multitude of additional detailed parts. Some of the resin parts for the hoses are quite small and fragile. The PE contains even smaller parts, especially the sheet containing the different bolt heads (you just keep the carpet monster away).

As for the omission, it wouldn't happen to be the refuelling point?

Regards,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Thanks for looking in and for your nice comments, much appreciated. Cool ThumpUp

Great to hear from someone who also has the Top Studio upgrades for this, it means you'll know exactly what I am dealing with in trying to get all that detail into something as small as a 1:20 car!! Sorry to hear you didn't manage to finish yours but glad to have you along for the build and I'll try to keep you entertained with my diary updates.

The omission isn't anything to do with the fuel system. BigGrin ThumpUp

Nope!! LOL Laugh They used a pneumatic starter, so the only key available would be the han(key) that Alain Prost would have used to wipe his tears when Ayrton Senna beat him?!! Laugh Laugh Cool ThumpUp
