A lot of the build this month was for me to get the right tones of how I want my R2 to look when he is finished and I am very pleased with the results and I will be adding the satin spray varnish which i hope will turn out O.K.

This was the first time I was able to place all components so far in the near correct positions and I am really excited to see him in all his glory moving around, speaking and lighting up NOW!!!!! Drool Drool

So this was a month I was really looking forward to. To actually start piecing him together as we know and love him on screen. Right up until this point I have been looking at the official build with envious eyes wondering what R2 would look like all built up...I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed Drool Drool Drool.

Mocking up the head support which I did not rush to put together last month as it was not going to be attached to the dome for some time was pretty straight forward.

Next I put together the final front leg which proved to be a great asset all by itself. This could so easily have been a supporting piece with just the turning wheel but to add the sensors at the front front of the leg was a superb addition and even this part has a good weight to it. Quite fiddly in some areas I wanted to piece this altogether before weathering. I couldn't be more excited at this point as I was only a few steps away from putting all the components in place.

At this point I masked up all the relevant wires for all the main legs and body panels and carefully sprayed everything with a satin varnish to hold all the paintwork as I knew the next few stages of piecing together would require a lot of handling.

Attaching the base panel on the metal body frame was pretty straightforward but attaching the legs proved to be quite fiddly on one side to connect at the same time as trying to get the wires moved out of the way to do this. At 1 point I thought I was going to have to open the top part of the leg to move the black sensor wire out of the way but luckily this wasn't needed. Phew!

Onwards with the front leg and he's really starting to shape up. It can be daunting to see all those wires within the body frame but the location of each one is very well thought out and it helps to just take a little time to view them over and remind yourself where each one belongs.

This is the point where I had to sit down and have a moment to think now comes the part where I can finally see (just for looks) if R2 is the droid I was looking for.

Temporarily adding the front and back panels was amazing but then adding the head took this 2 year build to a whole new level.

From here on in its all about the electronics and certainly what I have seen so far with various bits working over time this is going to be my biggest dream toy ever.

Lastly for this month was to attach the battery box holder and one of the circuit boards which went in all fine and dandy.

Ok so onto the home straight...ok home straight with some wiggly bits in it as we now have the parts that really need concentration to get right so our droid can wander freely.

This month has a few straight forward components though but you can start to see where it all mechanically comes together.

I first tested the batteries 1 by 1 on the tester for my readout which gave me the positive readout I was looking for in this case each cell came up as a 3.51 reading which means they are not duff, phew!!
Sorry I did not take any photos of this as I was nervous about the outcome :)

Next was to add the cable tidies on the MCU and very carefully place the whole thing onto the internal structure of the body.

The structure of the dome motor was pretty straightforward but I had to double check to make sure i was using the correct screws, really don't want this falling apart. I am finding the instructions on the whole of this build pretty easy to follow I must admit. This is the first electronic build I have put together of this complexity and it just goes to show how well this is all been put together by design.

I have not had a chance to test the motor as yet but I then added the dome motor structure (without screws) for curiosity purposes to the main structure and for storage. Looking ahead I know there are brackets to go on before I screw it down but it looks pretty sturdy and heavy lol.

Next month is judgement day with lots to bring it altogether and I simply cannot wait to see this droid come to life.
until then happy building everyone.
