next delivery has arrived and the build is really progressing now, things are shaping up and gathering momentum. this was a nice lengthy part of the build, with issue 30 taking a fair amount of time, which was really enjoyable. we are exactly 1/3rd of the way through with issue 30 - 33 here, almost completed a leg by routing wires, screwing all the parts together and adding the foot complete with infrared sensor - just the powercell to add next time! we have also added the final ring frame to the dome. the build so far feels really solid and is getting pretty heavy too!

here are my pictures

Yes its that time again, we have another R2D2 delivery! Issue 34, 35, 36 and 37!

Another nice chunk of building over this delivery section. In issue 34 we see 99% completion of the first leg (yes we have to do it all over again, but i suspect it will be much quicker for the next one!). All we have left is a few screw holes to plug up, but its as good as complete now and looking fantastic!

We have also made a start on the next leg in issue 36, and with issues 35 and 37 we build up the automated tube that will house Luke's light saber and allow it to 'pop up' through R2D2's infamous dome head. Sadly a part that will not be seen, but it was none the less nice to build up, all be it quite fiddly assembling the motor drive section with the rack and limit switches. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable section.

Just be careful when assembling issue 34, make sure you fit all the screw plugs first, and be aware there are 2 different types supplied as pictured. In issue 37, ensure you have the 2 limit switches in the correct place.

I also decided to stick the test board to the battery box with some double sided sticky foam, just to make life easier and keep the 2 parts together.

Roll on next month i should hopefully have a fully built up light saber to show off (although a trip to mexico in October means i will be late to the party on that one).

For now, enjoy my pictures and here is a link to a video showing the motor working and the leg driving along!

been a while since i added an update as not much has occurred in the last few months with the build. we added a few finishing touches to the completed leg by filling screw holes with plugs, we also made a start on the other leg, completing the main leg details, the ankle parts and main metal spine of the leg. the most exciting part was building the 1/2 scale light saber which looks fab! we also got another led panel for the dome which we could test too

thanks guys. cant wait for the next year of the build. its looking like a lot needs to happen still. a year in and all we have so far is a bag of bits and almost 2 legs. its going to be fun seeing the body and all the internals come together. thats what im looking forward to the most - the inner workings

been a while since i updated, so here is a bit of a catch up. more to be added tomorrow.

here i have issue 46, 47, 48 and 49. there wasn't masses of progress here, just adding more parts to the leg the same as before.

this was the last delivery of 2017, and almost half way through the build. from here onward things begin to get a little bit more exciting beginning with the next delivery.

Im complete upto issue 65 currently, just need to upload my updates. Although i need to re order issue 65 due to a damaged part that looks like its somehow melted and warped out of shape so it dosent fit at all.

the 1st delivery of 2018 saw huge excitement. we finally received the solid metal dome, and begin to see how it will all look! it was nice to see that the dome was well packaged on a huge block of polystyrene and a plastic cover. to cap it all off, the delivery came in a huge box, compared to the usual plastic bag. very nice indeed! and on top of that we are now passing the half way point of the build!!!!!

we also get a new test circuit board and the sensor circuit board so we can test all the sensors in the leg and the pop up light saber tube.

not much in terms of building, we just assemble another wheel, and add a small calibration plate under the IR sensor.

so all in all, not the most amount of building to start the new year, but we do have lots of exciting stuff!

i did have a few issues when it came to resting the sensors, but a quick call to customer services, replacement sensor test board ordered and everything worked perfect.

at this point, i decided to skip some parts of the build - primarily adding all the panels to the dome, in favor of leaving it all to do in 1 go at issue 65. in the mean time we continue build of the 2nd leg

the next delivery saw a return to having plenty to do. we get a few more panels for the dome, but as i mentioned i am saving these up to fit all in one go.

we also got the motor for the 2nd leg, fitted all the wires, closed up all the panels and fitted the foot covers.

Nice progress. It’s really coming together. Gotta admit though, the photos of the dome and leg had me imagining a R2-D2 style “leg lamp” like from A Christmas Story haha.
