Hello my people,

Brian here. Since I started my build, almost 2 years ago now, I have been taking pictures of my progress. However, I only recently discovered this forum, which has since been of great use to me. Unfortunately, my Phone, took an unfortunate tumble down a sink... so I no longer have any of those photos.... I'm currently at stage 37 although I have various other bits and pieces done, (a whole mast, some yards, all my cannons are ready, some small boats) mainly due to the fact that planking as you all know is extremely tedious at times.

I'm also in uni and working two jobs at the minute which is slowing down my build considerably as you can imagine.

My reasons for starting a build diary are simple really; 1. I'm losing track myself, 2. My pictures can't go missing if my phone has another unfortunate accident and 3. There are some phenomenal builds on here and I might be wracking some brains for input from time to time. Also, If you see me running headlong and blind into any really imbecilic mistakes, please let me know!

Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the forum. I know keeping a diary of each of my builds has kept me going when it sometimes seemed a daunting task. It's always nice to see different takes on the same model. I know my builds have become much better because of the forum. Looking forward to seeing your build.

So, some pictures at long last. Had to go back a few stages, because a few bits came off on me :-(
As you can see I have the launch done, the cutter started, Main mast done, yards started and a plethora of cannons in the works.

Have a look at the following

http://forum.model-space....aspx?g=posts&t=244

Its down to the file size which needs reducing otherwise you get the issue you are having at present.

A lot of forum members use photobox which does allow you to interspace text between images.

I direct upload mine having first re-sized them in PAINT.

Hope this helps

Your build looks fantastic by the way. Really neat planking on the hull.
Happy Modelling

Thanks tony! Naturally never bothered actually looking on the forum!

The planking is very satisfying when you're getting progress made, but it can get so tedious too. Think that's why it's taking me so long to get through it.

It's question time folks. two today!

1. I'm about to lay my garboard plank. I see on some of your builds, you've laid two rows of garboard planks?

2. I'm at the stage where i need to make a decision on internal lighting. The plan (roughly) is LEDs in the four lanterns and possibly some strip lighting throughout the gun decks and gallery. I know Garth has successfully lit his build, but having never tried it before I'm not really sure what I'm doing. All input on this matter is greatly appreciated

Welcome Brian, nice start.

I laid 2 gb's just to make mating them a little easier. It's no big deal at this stage though.

If this is your first period ship build, then it's advisable to follow as per the instructions, otherwise you'll quickly go astray and may fall into difficulty.

Regarding lighting, it's an ambitious project for a first time period ship build and you should start by idenfiying what you wish to light that will be visible. Some discussion info and guidance in this topic: http://forum.model-space...posts&t=191&p=3

So just to update:

Just went with the one Garboard either side.

lighting question is still open. historical accuracy would suggest only having lights in the gallery cabins and the lanterns (i.e. not on gun decks).

Got three more full rows done today. probably my most productive planking day ever!

Brian

Welcome to the forum Brian, you will get lots of advice and encouragement here.

Just lay the one layer of garboard planks as your last 10 planks to close the hull is calculated from this.

I have just closed the starboard side and am about to start on the port side so we are about at the same stage of our build.

z8000783 has put together an excel spreadsheet calculator that helps with the last 10 planks that I found very useful. If the link below does not work, look at his build diary. It's in his signature.

Thanks for all the advice,

I saw John's spreadsheet this morning. was planning on making one myself but That's just saved me a load of time :-)

Have any of you found that you seem to be running out of planks rapidly?

Brian

Hi Brian,
I found that the materials supplied was more than enough and I have plenty of planking left over.
