Hi shipmates,

It's me again. I'm browsing a build on another forum and I saw something that caught my eye. I don't have an electric plank bender, so I just use the soak-for-a-while and then the slowly-bend-and-hope-it-doesn't-snap methods.

What I saw was the guy mentioned using a "trusty soldering iron". The answer to my question is either very obvious, or it's not a real method. But can you use a soldering iron to bend the planking, and then, how does it work?

Kind regards,
Francois

Hi there

Here's a post from this forum going back to March 2010:

When I was planking the Del Prado HMS Bounty, the step-by-step instructions suggested moistening the planks where they needed bending and then running them backwards and forwards over the hot body of an electric soldering iron, held horizontally in a vice, gradually increasing the amount of bend. This method proved quite effective and similar to the planking tool above with the advantage in my case that I already had a small soldering iron fit for purpose.

I agree with Mike, the electric soldering iron does work well, but be careful that you don't singe the planks..take it easy, take your time, you'll get there...

Hi Francois

I also use a soldering iron and get good results on bening the planks after they were soaked in bioling water for about 20 minutes.

I was daft enough to purchase a proper electric plank bender to find i got better results with the cheap soldering iron.

Hope this help.

Hiya mate!

I only use an electric plank bender when working on fine scroll work, for everything else I use a plank nipper ( Amati Form A Strip) which can be purchased at Cornwall Model Boats or if you subscribed, it came in the free tool kit, by using this tool you can create bends in the timber without the need for soaking or getting burned fingers lol.

Just as an addition to this, the Mantua plank bending pliers also come with a set of differing anvil heads, which can be used with strip metal and wire when creating shapes etc.

I used two methods...A: Cheep hair curling tongs from Argos...And B: I soaked many planks in hot water for twenty minutes then applied them to the frame, allowing them to dry in place over night then gluing and pinning them the next day..I must admit that it was rather slow process, but I got good results from both methods...
Happy building.

I used an empty baked bean can, peeled the label off and put a tea light in side, It worked a treat, you need to make sure it's a smooth can rather than a ribbed one

Hi Gordon, the Roller bending tool is adjusted underneath via the butterfly nut. Adjust the main roller via the butterfly wheel to the thickness of the plank you are bending by checking the gap you require between the large main wheel and your selected smaller wheel. Soak the plank first in hot water for around 10 mins, feed the end of the plank between the rollers and slowly turn the large wheel which in turn will feed the plank through. Through practice you'll soon find the best way to achieve the bend you require. I have used the tool myself but found there are easier ways for me to bend planks.... Hope this helps..Cool Cool

Regards

Alan
