So I've finished the individual disk parts and started to put the main body together. This thing is a wonderful size and a very similar build to the smaller 1/12th version. My next task is to create the overall weathered feel of the movie prop. lholland attached the following image(s):

Created the rest of the weathering on the body over the last few days. I was a bit nervous painting ink all over it to start with thinking about how much that all cost me lol. Firstly I used my ever faithful starship filth to use around the edges of the orange disks. I used watered down burnt umber artist acrylic ink to create the overall dirt effects on the whole sphere. I found myself going over panel by panel and then using a dry cloth to wipe this off so the ink did not dry too quickly. I used the same ink to dab effects around the edges of the orange disks and then mixed a small amount of black ink to define the dirt in those areas. By accident the paint dabbing collected some of the starship filth I had put around the orange disk edges thus giving me the desired effect I was really pleased with. I have to say I am really pleased with the results and thought I would be experimenting an re-experimenting with different techniques. I can honestly say that the pictures don't do it justice but this is one of my favourite models I have ever built. lholland attached the following image(s):

Had time last night to build the head component. Not too many pieces to put together here but still very satisfying build quality. I added the first initial line detail and even had time to add the little red light into the eye lens which you get with the kit. Will be removing this when I use the ink method for the main dirt effects. I have also dry brushed a little silver for wear on the outer piece of the eye lens. lholland attached the following image(s):

Do you use a sponge to get the effect? In the end I bought a selection of sponges I was going to use and ended up using kitchen paper. A paint brush to dab the ink on and the paper to dab it off again thus the end results.

Sorry, but I think that's lazy. After all the effort and hard work you have put in so far, matt spray varnish. If he was mine, he's probably get a custom satin mix airbrushed on [OK, you may not have an airbrush, but at least go for satin spray.] with highlights on the worn metal edges with a higher gloss mix by brush, and some of the dirt given a more matt finish. Give him as much visual interest as possible. Figure modellers have been doing this for ages, I think it's time those of us with other interests stole that idea for better realism. Let's face it, if a model bust had only matt varnish on it, it would look flat and boring - especially if of a woman. Satin lips and gloss eyes are the least demanded today, no matter if a woman or not. You can go really wild if you include make-up effects too. Current Builds
