I've been drooling over this kit since it was announced. The cost had sort of put me off, but the $1.00 shipping special set the hook so I signed up today. If the quality is as good as the Toyota it should be awesome. The wheels look a bit intimidating, but there seems to be plenty of advice on the forum. 25 months......hope my colon cancer stays in remission!!

Received my first four issues this week. Very nice. The cylinder head acorn nuts were crying for some paint though. Also the front end of the head surrounding the timing chains should also be alloy, but there appears to be another bit that also goes there so I'll wait and see what that looks like before addressing this.

Well this is a bit of a show stopper. It didn't take long to realize that my outer wheel rim in issue 4 was in fact an inner rim for issue 5. Now we'll see how customer service responds. Mad

Still waiting for my issue 4 replacement. CS email said 1 to 2 weeks. Going on 3 now.

In the meanwhile bought a book on Amazon. "FACTORY-ORIGINAL JAGUAR E-TYPE"

BigGrin UPS delivered my replacement issue 4 as well as 5 thru 8 today. Also the reprint owners manual with maintenance chart.

I won't be doing anything out of the ordinary, so no pictures to post at this time.

Bloody hot in Florida this time of year so it's nice to have an indoor activity.

Confused Well.....I recall someone mentioning that they had to shim the rim on the jig. I found that to be true. The first row of spokes was close enough to being in the proper plane. However when I started the upper layer after getting half way around things started popping out of place. I pulled the thing off the jig and put some nylon shims a few mm thick and then put it back on the jig. All the spokes seemed happier after that. Another thing I did was to put a second layer of double sided tape over the first spokes prior to adding the next set. I also used some of the tape to keep the rim in place on the jig. Now it's time to do the issue 5 parts.BigGrin

Issue 5 spokes started out poorly and things got worse from there. Couldn't even get the first A spoke to seat properly. I thought maybe the issue 4 spokes weren't seated deeply enough not allowing the retainer to fully seat. So I removed the retainer (without being in the jig) to try to push any errant spokes further into the slots. Needless to say things quickly unraveled. I guess I'll completely disassemble the thing and start over again without extra tape or shims and see how it goes. If I can't master it maybe I'll wait til I have parts for all 5 wheels and send them across the pond to the fellow who has kindly offered to assemble them.Confused

Gary, (Great name, btw)

The main problems I had with the wheel went as follows.

The 'clip' bends on some spokes were too tight. This resulted on me getting lazy and only going for a 2 spoke crossover pattern. If this is the case on your wheel, the final bends (The ones closest to the rim, NOT the hub, can be eased a little until about 90°. This got me the 3 spoke crossover necessary for part 4.

Both parts also benefit from a slight deviation from instructions. Issue 4 I got correct by adding 3 spokes equally at 4 points around the circumference from the lower layer, then adding the three from the upper layer at each point once I had all the lower spokes in place.

Issue 5 was a lot more daunting due to the cross-over and through of the spokes. I managed to get it done working from one point and going round the opposite way to that stated in the magazine, but that could just be me. I did benefit from a decent set of self-closing tweezers, but you still can't have the issue 5 spokes all the way into the holes in the hub when you push them through or they just catch in the sides of the rim.

I hope this helps, because there is nothing like looking at the completed wheel and saying, even if it's only to yourself, "I did that!". If you need further help, send me a PM and I'll see what I can do to talk you through this via PM so as to not clutter the thread with this issue.

Confused I'll try unbending the spoke ends to 90 degrees, after all I now have an extra set.

I found an oddity...not sure if it's a defect or does it matter. The wheel center hub has come loose of the larger part so it rotates. As soon as I pushed the new hub from my extra issue 4 onto the jig I heard a slight snap and found that the smaller ring had come loose of the hub. It may not matter as long as the spokes are threaded correctly as I suspect everything will seek the proper positioning as it is assembled.

BigGrin ok....I relaxed the bends a bit. I also reapplied the DS tape this time being careful to get it DOWN IN THE GROOVE and not where it might interfere with the spoke slots or the surface that the retaining ring seats on. Things went back together problem free spokes and retaining ring look to be properly and tightly seated. The loose center hub position sorted itself.

I'll do the issue 5 spokes later.

Thanks Al. I've looked thru it a few times. I just needed to pay closer attention to the details. The tolerances on the Deagostini kits has been amazingly tight. The Chinese do some fine work. I'm glad they are on our side these days!

BigGrin SUCCESS!!!!! With some sage advice in a PM from Al I now have the wheel finished!!

Next to fit the tyre. I wonder if anyone has tried placing it in a vegetable steamer to heat it? Then it should be fairly dry coming out of that.....quicker to place on the wheel??

The steamer worked.

I built my drivers door during the break from wheel building.

Now to wait for next months delivery of issues 9 thru 12.
