ANOTHER ONE?!  Yeah, so here's the deal. Soleil Royals pack 12 really glosses over the whole rigging thing. I see myself failing at this unless I get some good rigging instruction under my belt. My original plan was to just build the SR up to pack 11 and declare her a hull model until I learned enough to tackle (hehe) the rest. Things have changed. A situation has come up where the girlfriends parents have expressed an interest in possessing a model of the Gorch Fock. Funny thing: I have an unbuilt complete edition of Deagostinis German-only edition Gorch Fock in my cellar. And it spends like 60 issues on explaining the rigging. So I've moved the time scale ahead a bit and started up the Gorch Fock build. If everything goes according to plan I'll arrive at the rigging parts at roughly the same time for both ships. In case you're wondering, the Gorch Fock (II) is Germanys sail training vessel. Updates will be after every 4 phases out of 120.  As you can see we start familiar in what is the typical OcCre style design. The front half of the inner hull structure is put together and the fore deck is planked. Quality is dismal with most wooden parts being wood pulp between two sheets of veneer. The middle frame promptly breaks after a short fall during phase 1. It will break again later (I know that because it just did and I re-re-repaired it). Off to a good start.

Hi Greyhawk
That looks like a nice build, don't recall seeing anything like this on here so your diary could be unique and I look foward to following you as work continues on her and I'm sure your parents-in-law will be proud that you are building this model for them. Don't worry too much about the rigging on the Soleil Royale, it will all come together in it's own time and the experience you get from this model will give you a boost in confidence.
A book that I can recommend is;
'RIGGING PERIOD SHIP MODELS' - author: Lennarth Petersson - publishr: Seaforth publishing.
If you go to Jase's build diary of the 'Pickle', he offers a link to a free download of this book. I think you'll find it very useful - I know I did!

Great to have you guys. You know how it is, the first few issues go by like a flash in a pan.  So this is after issue 8. The hull was extended to its full length, the support deck was completed and the first parts of the main deck are installed. Also, this happened in issue 6 (as foretold in the opener)  I'm glad that with wood just about anything can be repaired again.

 In issues 9-12 I've completed and planked the main deck, planked the quarter deck, put in the remaining frames at the stern, added the mast holder and supports at the bow, built, painted and adjusted the structure between main deck and fore deck and finally painted the rear bulwark between main deck and quarter deck. And I was wondering what took so long, this explains it. But no really, the fore deck structure demanded quite a bit of attention and had to be heavily modified to fit.

Thanks guys, she's nice to build even with the mediocre wood.  Finished issues 13-16: - varnished the main deck - built and painted the rear deck structures - mounted the deck structures and outfitted them with doors and portholes - painted and fitted the bottom wall strips (I'm using the 90s paint scheme) - installed the rear and fore decks - and added a bunch of fillers and supports to the stern and bow

Issues 17-20: After strengthening all internal contact points with diluted glue, the entire ship was faired. Fore- and quarterdeck were varnished, then the bulwarks were painted and installed. The first three rows of planking went on.
