Hi,
New guy here. Robin. Retired U.S. Navy. Long time plastic ship modeler but I am looking at the new USS Constitution 1:76 Model and wondering if I have the skills to build a wood ship.
Thanks

Hi Robin Welcome to the forum, as a first wooden ship build I would not recommend the Conny as its aimed at builders with at least one period ship build under there belt. A far better route would be to build the Victory first with its instructions aimed at novice builders and it will take you through the build from start to finish. Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Wooden ship builds can be a learning curve for us all that use many different skills to be learned and enhanced, what I would suggest is to look at the various wooden ship builds on here including the official builds and then make your decision on what you want to build. Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Welcome aboard Robin, hope you enjoy your time with us on the forum..... .. Like Andy says, read some of the ship build diaries, especially the Victory. The instructions for the Victory were compiled with the complete beginner in mind and I don't believe you will find any better. These in conjunction with the Official Build Diary take you through the learning process step by step and are easy to follow. Reading other build diaries will also help broaden your understanding as to what is involved in putting these together. There is also a wealth of knowledge available on the forum to help you with any difficulties you may come across, all you have to do is ask and someone will answer. Whatever build you choose I'm sure you'll love the experience..... Regards Alan

Thanks everyone for the advice! I am still leaning to the Conny because I have done the Heller Victory (I know plastic) and the 1/96 Revell Conny, so rigging I feel I can handle. I have worked with wood ships before just not plank on Frame. Solid hull types. So far this site is great and I am about to make the jump, just have to talk to the better half into this. Cost wise it's a bigger jump too. I have most modeling tool. What others tool are needed and recommended to start with. Like a Chopper I or II?
Thanks

I think you`ve already got a modeling back ground so there are different skills to learn but i think you`ll pick them up quite easily so i` say no worries just take your time with it and read as much on other peoples work on here as a guide for tools modelspace do some quality items regards Phil http://www.model-space.com/gb/modelling-tools-accessories.html?__utma=210999945.1649879936.1502170780.1502190702.1502192876.5&__utmb=210999945.74.10.1502192876&__utmc=210999945&__utmx=-&__utmz=210999945.1502170780.1.1.utmcsr=(direct)|utmccn=(direct)|utmcmd=(none)&__utmv=-&__utmk=146868596 COMING SOON =1/72 Italeri diorama`s Battle for the Reichstag and Stalingrad battle at the tractor factory 1/16 Trumpeter King Tiger with loads of extras ON THE GO= refurbishment of 1/25 Tamiya tiger 1 , amt Star trek kits and space 1999 models

Thanks Hello and a warm welcome to the Forum. I have the first two packs of the Conny and from what I have seen so far there is not a lot of difference in skill set requirement between them. Genrally the HMS Victory has very comprehensive instructions which is why it is often advised to start with her, but the Conny instructions will be far better than if you were buying this kit of the self of a model store and there is a so much help on the forum you will be Fine. I am building along too. I would not add any tools until you feel you need them if you are a seasoned plastic builder you will have the basics. you will probably need to make a base bard or keel clamp but thats all for now.
