Hi

Just a genrel question really.

im at the stage on the cutty sark of sanding the hull as have seen on various post about using sanding sealer.

Now i have a couple of very small gaps on the hull which can be filled in with sanding the hull. Will sanding sealer stop this from comming out or am i on completley the wrong track. if so, can some one tell me what Sanding sealer does.

Thanks in advance.

Sanding sealer seals (and therefore protects) the wood, the main advantage is that it makes sanding and achieveing the final finish easier, because it fills the pores and hardens the fine ends of the grain so that when you sand it the grain sands away smoothly, and provides an excellent base for finishes such as polyurethane varnish etc.

If you do not use sanding sealer, the first coat of your finish will raise the grain, and you'll end up with a poor surface finish and a lot of hard work to achieve a good final finish.

Be sure to use a sealer that is compitable with whatever you intend to apply over it.

Don't confuse sanding sealer with Primer, which is used as a prep for a painted surface.

just to add a few remarks, sanding sealer is usually cellulos based,so thinners is required to thin down, and clean brushes.you can build up thinned layers and a fine wet and dry between coats, you can get a really good finish, but be warned,it is smelly, requires good ventilation.best done outdoors.
