Why is it called the Samba camper, when it appears to be the micro bus version with sears rather than a kitchen and pop top? Are there parts to convert it to a camper?

I personly love the T1 and T2 but would not be intrested in this unless it was a camper version

The 'camper' reference is an editorial reference to the fact that the Volkswagen Type 1 & 2 known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US) or Camper (UK) - Camper is a generalised reference that's also noted in Wiki.

As noted in a previous post, the Samba was officially called the "Sunroof Deluxe". Around the world it became affectionately known as the Bus, Barndoor, Kombi, Bulli, Microbus, Splitscreen (or Splittie), Samba, 21 Window and 23 Window, to name just a few of its nicknames. To distinguish it from the normal Volkswagen van the name Samba was coined and in Australia, "Alpine“. The Samba, in the USA was also known as the 'Sunroof Deluxe'. Instead of a sliding door at the side the Samba had two pivot doors. In addition the Samba had a fabric sunroof. At that time Volkswagen advertised with the idea of using the Samba to make tourist trips through the Alps.

The Transporter was available as a:

Panel van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats.

Double-door Panel Van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats and cargo doors on both sides.
High Roof Panel Van (German: Hochdach), a delivery van with raised roof.

Kombi, from German: Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), with side windows and removable rear seats, both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.
Bus, also called a Volkswagen Caravelle, a van with more comfortable interior reminiscent of passenger cars since the third generation.

Lotação (share-taxi), a version exclusive to Brazil, with 6 front-hinged doors for the passenger area and 4 bench-seats, catering to the supplemental public transport segment.[citation needed] Available from 1960 to 1989, in both the split-window and "clipper" (fitted with the bay-window front panel) bodystyles.

Samba-Bus, a van with skylight windows and cloth sunroof, first generation only, also known as a Deluxe Microbus. They were marketed for touring the Alps.

Flatbed pickup truck, or Single Cab, also available with wider load bed.

Crew cab pick-up, a flatbed truck with extended cab and two rows of seats, also called a Doka, from German: Doppelkabine.

Westfalia camping van, "Westy", with Westfalia roof and interior. Included optional "pop up" top.

Adventurewagen camping van, with high roof and camping units from Adventurewagen.

Semi-camping van that can also still be used as a passenger car and transporter, sacrificing some camping comforts. "Multivan" or "Weekender", available from the third generation on.

Apart from these factory variants, there were a multitude of third-party conversions available, some of which were offered through Volkswagen dealers. They included, but were not limited to, refrigerated vans, hearses, ambulances, police vans, fire engines and ladder trucks, and camping van conversions by companies other than Westfalia. There were even 30 Klv 20 rail-going draisines built for Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1955.

As you can see, the only true Camper versions were the:

Westfalia camping van, with Westfalia roof and interior. Included optional "pop up" top. - this was a conversion rather than production line model.

Adventurewagen camping van, with high roof and camping units from Adventurewagen.

Semi-camping van that can also still be used as a passenger car and transporter, sacrificing some camping comforts. "Multivan" or "Weekender", available from the third generation on.

And camping van conversions by companies other than Westfalia.

As you can see, the Samba model has not got a kitchen nor are parts supplied to convert it, simple reason being is that the the model is the Samba variant and the Samba is not one of the true camper variants as noted above.

You mentioned in post #24 that you would heve preferred a classic camper version and that it might be convertable. The Samba is not one of the classic camper types which I've bold highlighted above, though many Transporters ended up as Camper conversions to include kitchens etc by companies other than Westfalia.

In effect the only true "Camper" variants that were motorhome-like were the Westfalia camping van or "Westy" as it is commonly known; the Adventurewagen camping van and the Semi-camping van, or one of the plethora of non Westfalia Camper conversions. But I am very sure that many Samba's (and other variants) were used for camping in the same way that many use cars for camping, load it up and go camping..

Most VW fans see the Westfalia camper as the ultimate conversion - its a conversion rather than production line version.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to do your own kitchen/camper conversion Flapper

Thanks for the clarity

Would not spendnthat sort of money to chuck a good proportion of the model away
Would look nice as a camper though

Scratch building an operable pop-top would be very difficult to say the least and you would also have to do away with the roof rack and luggage etc.

As mentioned previously, most VW fans see the Westfalia camper as the ultimate conversion - its a conversion rather than production line model and is an early version of a motorhome.

Meanwhile I'm sure that many put camping gear into Samba and went camping...
