Stage 92 Contains: Dummy Guns (Large), Eyepins, Columns, Gun Port Lids, Rings 2mm.

Remove the ‘A’ and ‘B’ parts from the fret and smooth with sandpaper, then collect them into two piles. Glue the ‘A’ parts onto the centre of the ‘B’ parts. Paint the outside of the doors with a wood stain of your choice, paint the inside of the doors with red ochre paint, then paint with clear varnish.

Paint the two barrels from Stage 36 with clear varnish. Mark the rings around the barrels with a black pen.

Cut a 1 x 4mm wooden strip into nine 10mm lengths. Glue a strip into the end grooves of one of the unused ladder sides, as shown in Step 92E. Glue the second ladder upright to the ends of the 10mm strips. Glue the rest of the 10mm lengths into the grooves in the ladder sides. When dry, sand the ladder and paint with clear varnish.

Cut through the ladder creating a section with four rungs. Test fit the shorter ladder at the point shown in Step 92I. Adjust the angles of the ends of the uprights so that they fit flush with the deck and strip along the side. Glue the ladder into place. Repeat the same process for the second ladder then glue it in place, opposite the first.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 93 Contains: Columns, Blocks 4mm, Deadeyes 5mm, Lower Gallery Windows, Walnut strips 2 x 7 x 300mm, Dummy Guns (Large), Chain.

Cut a 2 x 7mm strip to fit along the starboard gunwale as indicated in Step 93A. Sand the ends smooth then glue into position, extending 2mm over the outer edge.

Take a 2 x 2mm wooden strip and hold against the side of the model, 9mm below the forecastle gunwale, up to the front of the rail from the previous step. You may want to temporarily fit the gun port frames to make sure the strip doesn’t obstruct them. Glue the strip into place. Extend the row back from the 2 x 7mm strip with another 2 x 2mm strip. Raise the aft end of the strip so it is roughly in line with the notch in the transom.

Cut two lengths of the 2 x 7mm strip to fit from the strip in Step 93A up to the gunwale above. Glue into place. Drill 14 holes, to suit the size of the pin on the columns, along the centre of the rail, spaced 10.5mm apart. Apply glue to the pin at the end of one of the columns. Glue the column into one of the holes in the rail then repeat for the rest of the columns and holes.

Lay another 2 x 7mm strip along the top of the columns from the point shown in the inset photo in Step 93H forward. If the strip does not sit flush on the columns you will need to file the quarter deck gunwale down to the same height as the columns. Glue the strip into place.
Cut a section of 2 x 7mm strip to fit from the rail on top of the columns to the cathead. Glue the strip into place.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 94 Contains: Dummy Guns (Small), Columns, Blocks 4mm, Pins, Walnut Strips 2 x 7 x 300mm, Reinforcements Fret, Dummy Guns (Large).

Cut a 2 x 7mm strip to fit along the port gunwale as indicated in Step 94A. Sand the ends smooth and then glue into position, extending 2mm over the outer edge. Cut two lengths of 2 x 7mm strip to fit from the strip shown in Step 94A up to the gunwale above. Glue into place.

Drill 14 holes along the centre of the rail, spaced 10.5mm apart. Apply glue to the pin at the end of one of the columns. Glue the column into one of the holes in the rail. Repeat for the rest of the columns and holes. Glue another 2 x 7mm strip along the top of the columns.

Cut a section of 2 x 7mm strip to fit from the rail on top of the columns to the cathead. Glue the strip into place.

Raise the aft end of the strip up so it is roughly in line with the notch in the transom. Take a round file or sandpaper around a cylinder and smooth the circular gun ports and the aft end of the rail.

Take three of the circular gun ports and test fit them in position as shown in Step 94H, do not glue them yet. Check that they are aligned centrally. Use the round file or sandpaper to create a circular recess in the rail, 35mm forward of the circular port as indicated in Step 94I. Test fit a circular gun port in the recess to verify the shape. Repeat these steps on the other side of the model.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 95 Contains: Rail Fittings, Columns, Rings 2mm, Walnut Strips 2 x 7 x 300mm, Dummy Guns (Small), Gallery Parts Fret.

Create three holes in the starboard rail at the points indicated in Step 95A. The holes between the gun ports should have an 8mm space between them and the forward hole should be in line with the rail at the front of the quarterdeck. Glue a column into each of the holes.

Glue a 65mm length of 2 x 7mm wooden strip to the gunwale as shown in Step 95C. Use a round file or sandpaper around a cylinder to open the holes in the gunwale and rail. Test fit circular gun ports in place to verify the size and shape of the holes as shown in Step 95D. Glue another 2 x 7mm strip along the top of the rail in the area indicated in Step 95E.

Test fit the three circular gun ports into the holes to check that they still fit. Adjust the holes if they don’t.

Retrieve one of the handrail fittings from Stage 91 and test fit into place in the position shown in Step 95G. Adjust the fit if necessary and then glue into place.

Prepare a length of 2 x 2mm wooden strip to fit from the end of the lower rail to the transom, in line with the one below. Glue into place. Glue a second 2 x 2mm strip above the first, continuing the rail from Step 95E aft to the transom. Remove the parts of the strips covering the circular ports. Insert the circular gun ports in place to verify the fit. Repeat all steps on the other side of the hull.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 96 Contains: Bow Parts Fret, Crown Fittings, Shield Fittings, Dummy Guns (Small), Deadeyes 4mm, Blocks 4mm, Columns 8mm.

Cut a length of 2 x 7mm walnut strip to fit on top of the rail up to the gunwale, as shown in Step 96A. File flush with the gunwale. Mark four points 10mm apart from the front edge of the upright forward. Drill holes into each of these points. Glue four columns into the holes made in the previous step. Once dry, smooth the tops of the columns with a file.

Cut a 145mm length of 2 x 7mm walnut strip. Sand the ends smooth and then glue the strip into place as shown in step 96D. Glue a rail fitting from Stage 95 between the two rails as shown in Step 96E. Adjust the fit if necessary.

Glue a 2 x 2mm wooden strip from the rail in Step 96D back to the transom. Remove the excess then file the section blocking the circular opening. Test fit a circular gun port into the opening to verify the fit. Repeat all these steps on the other side of the hull.

Mark and drill 12 evenly spaced holes along the rail at the front of the quarterdeck. Glue a column into each of the 12 holes. Cut a 2 x 4mm strip to fit along the top of the columns. Glue into position.

Cut an assembled ladder into two shorter lengths with only two rungs. Smooth the ends of the ladders and then glue into the positions shown in Step 96J.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 97 Contains: Knees Fret, Gun Port Frames, Dummy Guns (Large), Rings 2mm, Columns 10mm, Pins, Eyepins, Columns 8mm.

Retrieve the fret from Stage 96 and remove the four dolphins. Smooth the surface of the dolphins with sandpaper. Take one of the dolphins and hold it against the beak and the hull, as shown in Step 97B. File the side of the dolphin that will be in contact with the bow with a half-round file to make it fit as close as possible with the hull.

Paint the edge of the dolphin with a wood stain of your choice and then glue to the hull and beak. Shape a second dolphin to fit on the other side of the beak. Repeat steps 97B to 97D to prepare and glue the other two dolphins to the sides of the prow and the hull as shown in Step 97E.

Prepare a 2 x 4mm walnut strip to fit around the bow, extending the upper dolphin aft. Glue it 10mm below the bottom of the gun ports. Glue two strips aft of the first to complete the row. Ensure that they are 10mm below the gun ports. Cut the strip flush with the stern.

Now prepare and glue another strip below the first, extending the lower dolphin aft. Make sure there is a 10mm gap between the two rows. Complete the lower row with two more strips. Trim the excess and file the ends of the rows, slightly rounding them. Repeat steps 97F to 97J on the other side of the hull.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 98 Contains: Gun Port Doors, Rings 2mm, Columns 10mm, Blocks 4mm, Doors and Windows, Windows, Eyepins.

Retrieve the lower stern gallery from Stage 83 and place into position at the stern as shown in Step 98A. The gallery must be aligned with the strips in front on both sides of the model, as shown in Step 98B. If the strips are too long, cut them down and then glue the gallery in place.

Remove the gallery reinforcements from the fret from Stage 94 and smooth them with sandpaper. Glue the larger one 30mm aft of the front of the gallery and then the smaller one in the position as shown in Step 98C.

Remove parts from the fret received in Stage 85 and glue the long piece up against the rear of the gallery and the reinforcements. Hold the large curved piece up against the reinforcements and the bottom of the long piece. Mark the area of the strip that the piece overlaps, as indicated in Step 98E.

Remove the part of the strip that was marked in the previous step. Glue the curved piece into place as shown in Step 98F. Fill the opening at the rear with spare 2 x 5mm strips, matching the curve as shown in Step 98G. Wrap some sandpaper around a cylinder and use it to smooth the strips in the previous step.

Step 98I shows how the parts should now look. Repeat Steps 98C to 98H on the other side of the lower gallery. Step 98J shows how the lower gallery should look when done.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 99 Contains: Middle Gallery Windows, Pillars, Gun Port Frames, Blocks 4mm, Rings 2mm, Dummy Guns (Small), Dummy Guns (Large).

Cut two short lengths of 2 x 7mm walnut strips and glue them at the back of the rail (circled) in Step 99A. Drill five evenly spaced holes in the rail, the furthest 50mm away and glue a column into each one. Glue a 2 x 7mm walnut strip over the gunwale and columns, then glue a rail fitting underneath the front end of the rail, as shown in Step 99B.

Glue two more 2 x 7mm uprights on the top of the rails and then two longer lengths to complete the rails back to the transom. File away the underside portion of the rail from the previous step that is blocking the opening for the circular gun port.

Drill 10 holes 10mm apart along the strip, as shown in Step 99D, then glue a column into each. File the tops of the columns so they are aligned and then glue a length of 2 x 4mm walnut strip on top of them.

Engage the middle quarter gallery from Stage 84 with the two lower notches in the transom, parallel with the lower gallery. Prepare the upper gallery parts received in Stage 82. Prepare them with planks if you haven’t already. Glue the rear part of the gallery onto the transom, engaging the tabs with the notches. Glue the two side pieces at the side, aligned with the rear piece and the strip in front.

Smooth the hull with sandpaper and then clear away any dust. Paint the hull, bowsprit, beakhead and any parts you have missed with clear varnish. When the varnish is dry sand the hull with fine grit sandpaper. Remove the dust and paint it again with clear varnish. Repeat this process until you have the desired finish.

Combine the two parts of the gun port lids from the fret received in Stage 98. Paint the outside of the lids with a wood stain of your choice and paint the inside with red paint, as shown in Step 99J. Then paint with clear varnish.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Recover the windows from Stages 93, 99 and 101. Smooth the surface with sandpaper and then paint them gold. Place the windows into position as shown in Step 102B. Mark the cut out areas of the window and the top line of the top window onto the transom. Remove the windows and paint the areas marked in the previous step with blue paint, as shown in Step 102C.

Take some leftover 0.6 x 5mm strips. Cut two 20mm lengths and glue the together. Then place onto the window and cut them in line with the edge of the cut out area, as indicated in Stage 102D. Smooth the piece with sandpaper, paint with a wood stain of your choice and mark the edges with a black pen.

Glue the first piece under the window as shown in Step 102F and repeat for the three other windows. Repeat this process for the other two window pieces.

Glue the two lower window pieces into place. Glue the last window piece into place, ensuring they are all aligned centrally.

Take the two heads and glue them into place at the bow, with the openings facing in.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Drill 12 evenly spaced holes between the catheads. Glue the first column into one of the holes. Make sure it is positioned perfectly vertical. Glue the rest of the columns into place.

Retrieve three gun carriages and place them at the side of the forecastle deck at the positions shown in Step 103D. Mark a line onto the forecastle rail, aligned with the centres of the carriages. Place three circular gun ports onto the rail, aligned centrally with the lines marked in the previous step. Then drill 10 holes along the rail at the positions shown in Step 103E, with the foremost hole 10mm forward of the gun port and the aft most in line with the aft rail of the forecastle.

Remove the carriages and gun ports. Glue 10 columns into the holes made in the previous step. File three circular recesses centred with each of the marks made in Step 103D.

Place the circular gun ports into the recesses. Prepare a gun and carriage for each port to check the height is correct. The guns should be positioned in the centre of the ports. Remove the guns, carriages and ports. Glue two 35mm lengths of 2 x 5mm wooden strips together and then glue along the centre of the forecastle rail with the front in line with the columns, as shown by the dotted line in Step 103I.
Repeat Steps 103D to 103I on the starboard side of the forecastle.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.
