Hi All, I`ve had a Life miniatures 1:10 scale bust sitting on the shelf for ages. The bust is titled "The few" and is of a Battle of Britain RAF fighter pilot, with his dog on his shoulder. Decided to start with the dog, although a little apprehensive as to how it`s coat would look. Used three shades of brown from a light colour base coat and dry brushed two further coats with a Red/brown for the final coat. Eye/nose detail was added with a semi gloss black. (Pics below) So, that`s where I`m at with this little project. Still have to paint in his collar and put on a finishing clear coat. Questions: Honestly, what`s your thoughts on the dog`s colour? and would a satin clear coat be best for a dogs fur?. Hi there Del From the look of the head I'd say the dog was a Red Setter in which case you might need to increase the 'redness' a touch to a kind of russet colour. As to the finish, the dog's coat would in reality have a slight sheen but I've always found in scale models adding a satin or silky finish just doesn't look right. You also find any kind of finish other than matt, even on an animal which is naturally satin will reduce any dry brushing to nothing as the contours of the fur and body will have their own highlights and shadows caused by the sheen in the varnish. Personally I prefer to keep them matt and dry brush the highlights instead. Best of luck though, it looks a great figure! Robin. Hi Del I would add some dark tones in red brown and another darker brown Then a wash around the darker area'a like under the eyes to add shadows. Looking good Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi Del. I would choose 4 colours of reds and browns. use the darkest colour on the deepest recesses in the fur. gradually blend the second darkest colour on to or around the darker shaded bits and then use your to lighter colours to highlight the lighter areas of the dog. shinning bright light onto the dog will give you a good idea of the shade and lighter areas. hope this gives you a few ideas. Dog is looking very good so far. Ian Current builds.Hachettes build the bismark,HMS Victory, HMS Hood. Finished Builds Corel HMS Victory cross section.

Thanks for some great responses. Have realised that people look at things differently, dependant on the info you supply. So: Robin; I`ve included another Pic of the dog on the shoulder of the trunk of the pilots body. I see where you got the red setter idea, but my thinking is a red setter could stand on the floor and reach your shoulders (well mine for sure). So my thought is that this dog represents a Cocker Spaniel. To that end not so red as the Setter. (Still open to opinion on that one) Andy; If I`m right with the Cocker Spaniel theory, then the darker brown shade would be appropriate and the shadow wash would definately break down the flat colour parts. Ian; Same thoughts with the colours. Another thought is that some animals have a darker colour on the outside of their coat and a lighter colour underneath (almost like a hair dye that is growing out). Appreciate that some more lighter tone highlights would improve the overall effects. Many thanks guys for your input , will post an update when I`ve made some adjustments. In the meantime a pic below of the dog on pilots shoulder to give a better representation of the scale, one against the other. Yep, you're right Del, seeing it in scale against the pilot its definitely more Cocker than Setter! Robin. And I've just realised the spelling 'naughty word' filter lets Cocker through untouched! Well, speaking of my dog (which is not this breed) but his undercoat is definitely lighter then his top coat of fur and his topcoat has a distinct sheen to it. My dog has a brindle coat so his fur is all shades of brown tan and black. Stuff gets everywhere. So as far as clear coating your dog I would at least use some sort of toned down semigloss clear coat if that's even possible. Maybe a mix of semigloss and flat at a 2:1 mix. You might have to experiment to get the right sheen. Just my 2 cents worth but I am sure you will make it look fantastic. Best Regards, Ron

Thanks Nytetrain, Think I`ll get the colour right first and see how it looks. Then make a decision on the final finish. By the way, I have two cats and the white one leaves fur everywhere, almost see a trail behind it as it walks it`s that bad. Strange thing is it`s never got a bald patch. Hi all, Well I`ve had an experiment with the colour of the dog and think I`ve got a much better colour now. It`s not so much a chocolate dog now. Here`s a couple of pics to show where its at. I`m a lot happier with this colour and even managed to retain some of the lighter under fur colour for effect. Just got to paint the collar in now.
