Not such a new modeler. Started out as a kid building plastic ships. Did most of the Airfix and lindberg kits.
Would love to find the war of 1812 topsail schooner plastic kit of ship named "sandpiper" I believe.
Tried building the Racehorse about 12 years ago, but due to a finger injury and bad plans it was a no go. Ended up burning the completed hull due to it having been "accidentally" stored for an entire year in the back of a mini van, warped the poor thing somehow.
Then I putted around making "homebuild" small boats to use up the material from the racehorse, and just to have fun.
Now I am back trying to find a model kit that works for me.

cheap and easy is the rule. easy is most important. Sadly for me, a lot of the kits I was thinking would be good are Mamoli.

While some of the branded kits are very good what you will find in quite a few are instructions that leave a lot to be desired. One thing with the deagostini offerings that i can say are the instructions and pictures really do make the building a whole lot easier. My christmas present this year was the Panart Royal Caroline and between a basic wriiten set of instructions and 4 plans all written in Italian its going to take quite a bit of working out and patience. Whatever you devide upon i hope you get lots of fun from your build. Happy Modelling

Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your time with us and I'm sure you'll love the experience of getting back into ship building.... .. I would recommend the Swift from MS as a first kit to take on. With this you have the added knowledge of knowing there are members on this forum ready to assist if required. Plus, you have the advantage of following some of the completed diaries of this build, the one from Pemberg especially as this was done as per the instructions.... https://forum.model-space.co.uk/default.aspx?g=posts&t=22600 Once you done this one then you could consider taking on one of the bigger ships on offer, armed with the knowledge gained from building the swift. I learned along time ago that the photos on the box, and the photos in the advertising photos are not always what the kit CAN build unless your someone like Mastini and have 3-500 hours of spare time and perhaps 3,000$ in spare parts and material laying around to add to it.
I really like the attitude here so far in this forum. Its cheerful, unlike a certain forum about shipmodeling I tried to join last week.
None of the retailers agree as to what skill level one kit is, and it gets annoying when one site says its made for rank amatuers who don't know the difference between a glue stick and a pin nail, while others say its advanced..

Great to hear you find the attitude on our forum to be cheerful and friendly. This is a family forum and one we strive to ensure remains friendly and cheerful. The forum contains a membership with a vast amount of experienced and novice modellers alike covering all genre. Many of our members embarking on the world of ship building were rank novices when they joined us and are now producing some wonderful looking builds due in part to the help and advice they have received from other members. Take a look through the Finished Builds and you will see the standards being produced: https://forum.model-space.co.uk/default.aspx?g=topics&f=100 I think the vast array of spare material built up by modellers is something that has been built up over the course of their modelling career, a lot of it coming from the left overs from previous kits. I know that is how I built up my materials box... Determining the skill level of a kit will always be debateable and is one of the reasons why I would recommend either a DeAg partwork or kit from MS. The instructions are the best out there plus of course you have the vast array of experience here on the forum to tap into when needed.... Regards Alan

to much to build out there.
Instead of a kit, I was thinking I should find myself a set of plans online for something small and simple and burn off what I have from the racehorse kit.
