Next continue planking the hull upwards until it is fully covered with sapele strips making sure you remove the strip where it blocks the gun ports and bowsprit hole.

Stage 51

Stage 51 contents:- Cannon parts, sapele strip, pins and blocks.

Continue planking the hull downwards with sapele strip placing three more rows of planking one below the other making sure you stagger the planks as you go. Be careful to remove excess plank from the area of the false keel at the bow and that you carry the run of the planks at the stern up to the transom reinforcements. Also note the the last plank laid at the stern will need trimming to a point to allow the true flow of the plank over the stern.

Next take a strip and glue it along the false keel at the bow leaving an overhang that will be trimmed to follow the curve of the bow when the glue is dry. Lay more strips following the false keel until you reach the stern. Add another row of strips below the one just laid making sure you stagger the strips as you go. When the glue is dry cut the excess off the strips at the bow making sure it follows the curve of the false keel.

Repeat the above steps on the other side of the hull.

Stage complete.

Stage 52

Stage 52 contents:-
Sapele strip, gratings and pins.

Note: As the planks are added you will start to get gaps between some planks that will need to be filled with wedges further on in the build . You have a choice here to complete the planking as per the instructions and filling in all the wedges once the hull is fully planked or you can fill the wedges as you go. I chose to fill as I planked but how you do your planking is down to yourself.

Add two more rows of planking under those laid in the last stage next to the false keel making four rows in all. The last row laid may start to split at the stern as I said above you can start to fill them as you go or do them all together once the planking is complete.

Add another three rows of planking below the two just laid noting that the planks will need staggering which will start forming the the wedges at the bow and stern areas as you let the strips follow there natural curve along the hull.

Start a new row of strips along the upper row of planks laid in stage 51 noting that this row will stop short of the stern area and the plank laid under it will form a wedge shape as the strip follows the curve of the hull. Fit another four rows of planks below those just laid staggering them where needed as you go.

When you have completed one side repeat the stage on the other side of the hull.

Stage complete.

Stage 53 contents:-
Sapele strip, cannon parts, deadeyes and pins.

From stage 25 take a 2 x 5 x 300 mm ramin strip and cut it into ten 15mm long lengths. Sand a curve at the top of each length so they all look the same. You can paint each part now with green paint or wait till later.

Fit five lengths to each side of the inner walls of the ship placing the first forward of the first gun port, two more at the front and rear of the rectangular hole mid ships and the last two between the three stern gun ports.

Continue laying four rows of planks from the false keel downward noting that the strips will start to meet with the upper rows of strips at the bow and at the stern begin to join with each strips laid on both sides of the hull.

Complete the above on the other side of the hull.

Stage 54 contents:-

Continue laying four rows of strips towards the false keel leaving wedges or filling them as you go. Now do the same but from the false keel downward. Carry on using this technique until the hull is fully covered with strips just leaving the wedges to be filled if you have not already done so.

Do the same for the other side of the hull.

Stage 55

Stage 55 contents:-
Stern gallery, ramin strip, sapele strip, eyepins and blocks.

This is the stage where the wedges are to be filled if you have not already filled them as you planked. To do this take a sapele strip and cut it to the length needed then trim the wedge to fit the gap and glue in place ,do the above until all the gaps in the hull have been filled.

Allow the glue to dry then sand the hull to give and even finish remembering to be careful not to sand through the thin strips of second planking.

Next take the stern gallery base and line its rectangular hole up with the tab on the stern deck making sure it is a good fit and square to the hull sides. Once you are happy with its fit glue the gallery in place. When the glue has dried stick the gallery provided in this stage to the gallery base fitted to the ships stern making sure you line up all the ports on both gallerys.

Stage 56

Stage 56 contents:-
Rudder and keel parts, wood strip, walnut strip and pins.

Sand the top of the stern gallery so it is level with the ships side walls then from stage 54 take a 1 x 5 x 300 ramin strip to line the inside of the stern gallery making sure you cut the excess from the ports as you place the liner strips in position.

Next if you have not already done so is to take your chosen green paint and paint the inner sides of the walls I have used Tamiya Dark Green 2 XF-70 [ used to be called Brunswick green] on my model. Once the the paint is dry you can weather it by using a wood stain wash over the top of it if you wish.

Take 2 x 2 x 300 ramin strip and paint it black when it is dry cut 6 lengths at 8mm and 6 more at 10mm long and paint the ends black. I am using Admiralty paints dull black on my parts.

Glue the 10mm long lengths 4mm forward of the bow upright three on either side and then glue the 8mm lengths either side of the middle port on the inside of the rear gallery.

Stage 57

Stage 57 contents:-
Stem, keel parts, hinges and brass rod.

Remove the stem and keel parts from the fret then sand the edges smooth. After that take a dark wood stain and stain the edges to get a uniform colour.

Check the fit of the stem against the ships bow making sure it is a good fit onto the false keel. If needed adjust the gap to get a good fit and glue the stem to the bow making sure the top of the stem lines up with the bowsprit hole and is at the same angle.

Next take the keel piece and adjust its fit the same way that you did the stem and glue it in position on the hull. Dry fit the stern post and adjust it if needed then place is to one side.

Stage 58

Stage 58 contents:- Whaleboat parts, anchor parts, sapele and ramin strips.

Take the whaleboat and smooth the outside to remove any burrs then paint the outside white and the inside a brown colour. Take the 2 x 2 x 300 sapele strip and cut two lengths at 45mm and one at 60mm. Glue the 45mm lengths centrally to each side of the 60mm length then glue this assembly to the inside base of the whaleboat. Next take a 1 x 3 x 300 ramin strip and cut it to length to make seven thwarts for the whaleboat.

Remove the gunwale from the fret sand its sides and then use a dark wood stain on the gunwale. Glue the gunwale to the whaleboat and leave to dry. Take two eyepins and trim most of the shanks off them leaving around 3mm then drill two holes at either end of the whaleboat and glue the eyepins into these holes.

Stage 59

Stage 59 contents:-
Gratings, eyepins, ramin and walnut strip.

Take the fret from stage 56 and remove the parts , sand and stain the edges as you did before then fit them to the false keel adjusting the gap if necessary. Next glue the stern post in position and trim the keel so it is flush with the stern post.

I had enough sapele strip left over to cover the stem and keel parts if you wish you can do the same or leave the parts as supplied.

Lightly sand the whole hull to get an even finish and then apply a clear coat over the entire hull. Try not to apply it too thickly, two or three thin coats will do as the upper hull will be painted at a later stage in the build.
