I have been building my model for several months now and apologies for only getting around to uploading my build diary now. It has only come about after I eventually tidied up all my computer based pics into some sort of order. Hopefully they will be of use to those who are only starting out on what for most people is a daunting task. This is my first model and I decided to build as a test of my patience and a long fascination with sailing ships. I must say as I complete each step it has turned out to be a really rewarding hobby.

Thanks for your support. When I got to this stage I was amazed at how difficult it would be to bend the planks. I soaked my planks in a pint of warm water for around 30 minutes before using the plank bender to get the angles. After a bit of trial and error I finally got the hang of it.

The final few planks were tricky but I purchased a digital caliper and followed the instructions and it all turned out fine in the end, I thought

Thanks for the feedback. I am gonna try and do my best with the woodplanking as I quite fancy having the natural finish to the ship rather than the painted version so hopefully I'll not need to use the filler. I used beech varnish on the decking before turning the whole lot over a to plank the hull.

I should have pointed out that even to get to this stage of the build you will have to consider buying a couple of extra craft tools. The hidden extras of hobbying!! My first extra purchase at the start was a cutting mat and a steel rule. The mat came in extremely handy especially on the good days when I moved outside to complete some planking.

Obviously sandpaper is a must buy. I bought P60 to do the heavy duty sanding and a fine grade 120 for finishing followed by even finer superfine 320 when varnishing. I used a block sander and adapted my sandpaper to fit. I also found the foam block sanders quite handy for getting into the curves.
Blades for the knife were another purchase I found useful. I actually bought a cutting kit with a selection of knife blades quite cheaply online. Extra small drill bits were also purchased at the local craft shop.

I jumped too quickly and purchased the mini plane before I realised that the knife blades and the sanding block were far more fit for purpose. A digital caliper however is a “must buy” for completing the hull and it saved me a hell of a lot of time.

Other purchases included bulldog clips, steel rule, pencils, and I eventually bought a saw and small mitre box from a local craft suppliers followed by permanent markers, dividers, glue paint and varnishes.

I know how you feel there Belfastmick. I to started this build and soon found i had spent quite a bit of money on extra tools, but when finished the old Vic will be worth every penny.

Keep those pics coming.
