Hi, Some advice regarding staining and varnishing, please? I have decided to paint my HMS Victory build but am confused about whether there is any requirement to stain/varnish some pieces as the build progresses. I can see that some do, and wondered whether advice or guidance is given in the magazines at the various build stages as to what to stain and/or varnish?

Hi The instructions do give clear guidance on both the natural and painted versions with clear tips on what needs to be stained or painted. As you have decided to construct the painted version then I would recommend you follow the Official Build, this build has produced the painted version and is built in accordance with the written instructions. Here is a link to the Official Build: https://forum.model-spac....aspx?g=topics&f=17

Hello Alan,
does it really give advice to staining? I believe stain soaks through the planks which makes it really difficult in the upper part where it changes from yellow to black. I love to stain my model is my planking will be as good as yours (you are the guy in the video diary?). I'm gluing the ribs right now so a little time left but already trying to figure out the best way to colour the hull

Hi Dan. There's no way you could use wood stain to achieve the black and yellow stripes. As you said the stain soaks into the wood but it doesn't just soak down, it also bleeds sideways as well so even masking tape wouldn't work. If you want the traditional colour scheme you'll need to paint it, preferably with the Admiralty acrylic paints specially designed for ships of this period. I would recommend painting the whole side of the hull in the yellow ochre from the copper plating up to the top of the upper most yellow stripe. This will provide a good undercoat for you to then mask off and paint the black parts and stripes. Painting the yellow over the black is much harder to achieve! Robin. Thank you, Robin.
I'm not necessarily up to make it as much original as it was. I assume I would have to take a salmon pink then. I've seen pictures with a yellow/orange which I prefer over the ochre tone. But since I got some more time to think about it know now. I'll see.
