Since primary School when I first came across a book that had a two page story on the sinking of the Titanic I have, like so many people, had a fascination with this ship and the evens of that night. 15 or more years ago Academy brought out a Titanic in 1:350 scale the most accurate model at the time, I built that with WEM etch and it looked great. but time and my budget have moved on and the model got damaged my a mad woman I was once married to 
so I have been collecting the parts to build this ship again to the very best of may ability my 'Ultimate Titanic build', I will come back to that.
As some of you may have read in my earlier post and others may know in July this year there are two 100 year aneversrys that are linked to the Titanic disaster. The Cunard Line transatlantic passenger steamship RMS Carpathia was sunk by a U boat and in the same month, just a few days between events Arthur Henry Rostron, the captain of the Carpaithia who was held as a hero for picking up the survivors after the titanic sunk, became Commodore of the Cunard Line.
Seems like a good excuse to get this project underway
So in July I will launch my ultimate build of the Titanic on this thread. It will be an ultimate build because I am using the most accurate kit on the market, because I am adding wood decks, because I am adding a lot of etch, because I am adding lights, because I am adding 3d printed parts and because I will be doing a fair amount of scratch building

Kit review
My base kit is the Mincraft Centenery kit. The mini craft kit is largely accepted to be the most accurate representation in a commercial kit, but it is not without error or challenges due to the scale. That said if you build straight from the box you still get the best Titanic you can build and most people would not know about the errors.
The box is rammed with plastic and the first part out is the single hull moulding. there is lots of rivet detail and some of the hull plating disappears on the hull bottom but the single piece hull will save some constitution time.
Instructions are next out of the box. these are weighty and very comprehensive with pictures and text to insure correct part placement.
There is two sets of decals, which include depth markers and the gold stripe around the hull. also some of the larger warning signs as will as the life boat markings and flags.
The stand is very large but may be helpful for the lighting? The supports for the ship are nice and wide, so this will definitely help get the first wires into the hull. There is a nicely finished name plate for the stand also which needs no painting
There is a single clear fret with all the assorted skylights, and the stand tops. painting the domes may be tricky!!
There is a bag with black anchor chain, not sure if this is metal or plastic at the moment, in the bag is also some very fine rigging thread, looks a bit glossy though.
the next fret out of the box is the anchors and propellers, much better than the Academy ones which are gold and over size. this look to be to scale with some nice detailing.
next are a couple of bags of cream parts, decks and some superstructure. this are a big improvement on the Academy kit which had over sized wood grain effect on the deck. all of these windows will be removed and replaced with etch and glazed.
The numerous whit frets look to be the original Academy parts to me. all the railing and rigging will be replaced. the holes in the funnels will need filling and the crane bases are all identical which is incorrect.
one of the biggest errors that is not corrected from the Academy kit is the shape of the officers cabin inside the wheel house. it is incorrectly curved as on the Olympic, Both Titanic and Britanic I believe had flat fronts to the cabin so this need rectifying. it also causes a problem for the wood decks, which accommodate the kit error - I do like a challenge
All in all its a super kit to build straight from the box if you replace the railings. But I have big plans for this kit, more on that soon.

Hi Jase, Looks like you have a lot to get your teeth into with this one. I don`t know anything about minicraft, so googled it and was suprised to see they have two kits on the market of the same ship and same scale.  The "Centenary edition" model #11318 and the "Deluxe edition" model #11320. Apart from a price difference ($20) the only thing I can see different is that the deluxe version includes brass railings. Just wondering if you know any other differences as the web search shows nothing else other than the railings and if its cheaper to buy the railings seperately as an addition to the Centenary edition or buy the Deluxe edition straight off. It won the award for Model of the Year when released in 2010 and includes wooden decking and numerous photo-etched parts for enhanced detail. In addition to the base kit I have one or two additions to add,
lets start with wood laminate deck. The Art Box decks are designed specifically with this kit in mind. there are four sheets of deck which cover everything. the detail of the decking is great.
Laminate decks are a great way of quickly adding some realism to a plastic kit, but they also can be a limiting factor. The last photo shows the deck section of the wheel house with a curve to meet the curve of the model bulkhead, however the model is wrong and this should be flat, which means I am going to have to get creative with creating some planking in this area

Hi Jase
I don't know if you are aware but Trumpeter are bringing out a 1/200 Titanic kit later this year (It's in their 2018 Catalogue). The detail should be amazing and there are bound to be a very large amount of aftermarket products for it.
I have purchased items from John at Scale decks recently and he has already confirmed to me that they will be producing their amazing tinted decks for this monster.
Like you I'm a big Titanic fan, I built the Academy 1/350 kit many years ago and followed all of the alterations recommended from the Titanic Research Association. So I will find the space somewhere and eagerly await the release of this beauty.

At that scale a prime candidate for rc, smoge generators and a sound card to say nothing of being able to corectly light her up. She will be a substantial kit at about 4.4 feet long!
