Captain America- Easy Rider Chopper - The classic stars-and-stripes Harley-Davidson!

The customised Captain America chopper Peter Fonda rode in the 1969 classic 'Easy Rider' came to symbolise the counter-culture movement of the 1960's, riding it has been described as like 'going out with Marilyn Monroe'.

Only one bike remains from the four made for the 1969 'Easy Rider' movie and is one of the most recognisable motorcycles of all time. The bike was a central part of the movie, which is about two drug-using bikers who went on a cross-country journey from Los Angeles to New Orleans to discover the real America.

The motorcycles for the movie, based on Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide bikes with hardtail frame and pan-head engine and were designed and built by two African-American chopper builders - Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy - following ideas of Peter Fonda, and handled by Tex Hall and Dan Haggerty during the movie shoot.

In total, four former police bikes were used in the movie. The 1949, 1950 and 1952 Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide bikes were purchased at an auction for $500, equivalent to about $3400 in 2017. Each bike had a backup to make sure that shooting could continue in case one of the old machines failed or got wrecked accidentally. One Captain America was demolished in the final scene, while the other three were stolen and probably taken apart before their significance as movie props became known. The demolished bike was rebuilt by Dan Haggerty and shown in a museum. The provenance of existing Captain America motorcycles is unclear, and has been the subject of much litigation.

An Easy Rider motorcycle on display at the EMP Museum in Seattle, Washington is identified by that organization as the original rebuilt movie prop. A replica also resides at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. Many other replicas have been built since the movie release, and replica's of the Captain America bike and Billy bike are on display at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Stage 1 contains – Fuel Tank, Front Bracket, Rear Bracket, Fixing Screws and Filler Cap.

Note that the blue front bracket has a crank in the middle and one end is more curved than the other, ensure you place the part the correct way round. Then screw the bracket to the mounting hole in the fuel tank.

Note that the rear red bracket fits with the straight end facing the tank. Use another screw to fix the bracket to the mounting hole in the fuel tank.

The filler cap has a bayonet fitting, with two lugs that fit into the two notches on the tank filler. Place the cap onto the fuel tank and give the cap a quarter turn to secure it.

This stage is now complete. Carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag for future use.

Stage 3 contains – Headlight Rim, Headlight Glass, Headlight Reflector, Headlight Shell,Right-hand Bracket, Left-hand Bracket, Fixing screws, T-bar Spanner and Front Tyre.

Note the headlight glass markings are not symmetrical so ensure it is the correct way up. Note the different size notches on the left and right. The headlight rim has two small lugs on the inside that match the notches on the glass. The outside of the rim has some clamp detail moulded in at one point which will go at the bottom of the finished headlight.

Fit the glass into the rim with the glass curving outwards, making sure the notches and lugs line up with each other. Ensure that the lugs go into the notches so that the glass fits flush.

Note the headlight reflector has two notches on the rim that match the notches on the glass. Line up the notches in the reflector with the lugs on the rim in the same way you did with the glass and press the reflector all the way into the rim.

The headlight shell has two large tangs which fit into the matching recesses in the rim. It doesn’t matter which way up these go. Fit the rim over the two tangs and give it a slight twist to lock the headlight assembly into the shell.

Holding the light with the clamp detail on top, align the right-hand bracket ensuring it is the correct way up. Line up the mounting holes on the bracket and the headlight shell, fit one of the mounting bolts into the hole. Screw it up finger tight then use the T-bar spanner provided to tighten the bolt firmly. Fit the left-hand bracket to the shell in the same way as the right.

This completes the assembly of Pack 1. Carefully store any remaining parts in stage labelled bags.
