Both Tomick, and the 'Mag' say's the ribs are made from 1mm X 5mm strip, should this not be 2mm X 5mm strip, both the plan and the photo's look like 2mm??
While I'm here I would just like to say that some parts were missing from one of the latest issues, I contacted 'De Ag' and they are sending a replacement 'Mag' straight away, excelent service from 'De Ag', just hope the suplier is as good with their posting!

Happy buildingLOL ,

Hi Jeff! Cool

Your right another typo should be 2mm x 5mm planks used for the ribs, also the magazine shown the drill holes in a different place to the instruction and if that wasn't bad enough the main mast plan doesn't show the same part as supplied and the hole are again in the wrong place. Tomicks build diary is correct he moved the holes to the correct place this is what I followed, Tomick hadn't said there was a problem with the instructions for the fighting top. The end result is you can't follow the magazine or the plan for the placement of the ribs you will have to work it out yourself! the 1.5mm holes on the side must be left clear so use a drill bit to mark the hole as you fit the rib next to the bit, the smaller 0.7mm holes can be under a rib that’s ok!. Take a look at the post below:-

http://forum.model-space...s&m=27852#post27852

Use the plan to help guide you in the placement of the ribs but you will need to move some to keep the side holes clear. The good news is the fore mast plan is correct and can be followed both for the hole placements and the rib placements.

Hi all.
Could any one please explain what purpose the ribs serve in the fighting top, other than reinforcement of the structure. I have an image of some poor marine attempting to unload his musket while tripping over the ribs and possibly killing one of his officers. Accidentaly of course or am I missing the obvious.Blushing

lol Capt Birdseye, I was wondering that exact same thing. With the scale being what it is these ribs would be 42cm high. Maybe enough to brace oneself in stormy seas?

Looking at this image it does appear to be in keeping with the norm

According to Longridge, the reinforcing ribs in the fighting top were usually 4 inch wide and about 4.5 inch thick at the rim, tapering towards the hole in the centre. That's a dimension of about 10 cm. When you scale this down, you get a figure of about 1.2 mm. so I would suggest that 2mm x 5mm is the wrong timber to be using.

Like most on here I have noticed the odd error or misleading photo in the mag, and if it's not too easy to work out ourselves there's alway's Tomick who pulls everything together, however it's his job to show us how to build this work of art, not rewrite the 'mag',but he generaly manages that as well!!Cool
There's a few things not quite right, either on the 'mast plans' or the mag, but thats the good thing about this forum, we keep each other right and correct the mag!LOL

Ps, I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong! "I did'nt"LOL LOL

Thank's chap's

If one assumes that the picture on the front of the magazine is the ship we're building, the picture on the front of nr 27 shows the exposed ribs.

Many thanks for your reply Tomick. Looking at the interesting picture I notice there is a lip around the center, which would trap any rain and make it a pretty bad place to seek any protection from rough seas.
Believe you are right, possibly only for strength.

I dare say a few tripped and fell from the mast top as a result, or when trying to dodge canon balls and musket shot LOL

I would like to add that I fitted the 1mm.x5mm.and it looks right to me so I left it as it was,the fighting top looks right that way,2mmx5mm would have looked to me a bit too heavy.

I agree with you Karl, I settled for 1.5x5mm on mine. I tried the 2x5mm we were supplied with first, but it just seemed like there was not enough of a gap between each rib. The 1.5x5mm looks more 'right' if you know what I mean.

To be honest, I still don't get what planks you guys are talking about. If there is a typo in the magazine, it would be nice to know, even if it's weeks ahead.

Could you tell me exactly which issue number and page, which step we have to alter ?

Thanks, Timm

hi timm,we are discussing the fighting top(crows nest or 1st.platform)on the main mast,it is a 'd' shape platform which is between the first part of main mast and the second stage,on top of the platform are small ribs, see mr.t pic, these ribs radiate outwards to the edges, the mag says 5mm.x1mm.it should read 5mm.x2mm.and that's what we are discussing, hope this is clear to you.
