Issue 21 - Contains the upper engine block, base, left/right engine mounts & covers; and has instructions for Stage 1 of the engine build: Attaching the engine covers and mounts to the upper block, and attaching the lower blocks to the engine base.

Building the engine 1

This issue includes the first parts of the Mercedes-Benz FO 108V V8 engine. These are assembled using a new screw size and type (Type F - self tapping) - a Philips size 1 driver is required though some size 0 driver's may also be suitable dependong on manufacturer type etc.
Where die-cast parts need to be glued to ABS parts, a suitable adhesive will be required such as Super Glue - A gel type may be preferable to avoid glue run.

Attaching the engine covers to the upper block - Identify the left engine cover and test fit to the upper engine block, holding the parts together insert a screw and tighten part way, then insert another screw and tighten both being very careful not to overtighten. Then repeat the process with the with the right engine cover.

Attaching the engine mounts to the engine base - Trial fit the left and right engine mount into the engine base, then super glue both to the engine base.

Attaching the lower blocks to the engine base - Test fit the tabs in the left lower block into the slots of the engine base, apply super glue and glue the block into place, then repeat the process for the right block.

That's it for this issue, carefully store the remaining parts.

Future issues:

Issue 22 - Contains the front & rear engine blocks, block outer & inner, exhaust ports and screws; and has instructions for Stage 2 of the engine build: Adding the block to the base, attaching the front & rear blocks, and adding the exhaust ports.

Issue 23 - Contains gearbox housing & plate, drive shafts, CV joints, suspension mount & screws; and has instructions for Stage 1 of the gearbox assembly, starting with attaching the gearbox housing plate to the engine, assembling the drive shafts, and attaching the gearbox housings to the housing plate/engine.

Issue 24 - Contains gearbox housing top, suspension arm stays, gearbox oil filters & screws; and has instructions for Stage 2 of the gearbox assembly, installing the gearbox filters, attaching the gearbox housing top, and adding the suspension arm stays.

Issue 22 - Contains the front & rear engine blocks, block outer & inner, exhaust ports and screws; and has instructions for Stage 2 of the engine build: Adding the block to the base, attaching the front & rear blocks, and adding the exhaust ports.

Building the engine Stage 2

Take care when tightening the self-tapping screws, over tightening might strip the threads - stop tightening as soon as the parts are firmly fixed, or when the resistance in the screw driving increases.

Assembling the block on the base - Before you assemble the block onto the base, inset a type 'A' nut into each of the hexagonal sockets in the base - check that the nuts are located squarely in the sockets.

With the nuts in place, fit the block outer (part 2) onto the base so that its flanges slot between the walls of the channel; then holding the parts together, fit the hexagonal ends of the two posts on the block inner through the holes in the block outer, into the hexagonal holes in the engine base.
Then insert the long post of the upper assembly into the hole on the top of the inner block and push the parts together, ensure that the upper block seats properly.

Attaching the front and rear - The engine block rear is attached to the assembly with four screws fitted through holes in the rear block and into screwholes in the engine, carefully tighten these self-tapping screws (especially the lower screws which fit into elongated holes).

The engine block has two flanges that fit into slots on the engine and two holes that fit over the two pins on the engine. The engine block front is secured to the engine by two type 'A' screws inserted through the holes, take care not to overtighten.

Insert a type 'C' screw (from issue 21) into the central hole under the engine base, take care not to overtighten.

Adding the exhaust ports - The exhaust ports are identical, but make sure you fit them to the engine with the wider sides of the exhaust outlets uppermost, sparingly apply superglue to the side of the moulding which has three small pins, then press the port into place and repeat on the opposite side of the engine.

That's it for this issue, carefully store the assembly and any remaining parts.

Future issues:

Issue 23 - Contains the gearbox housing & plate, drive shafts, CV joints, suspension mount & screws; and has instructions for Stage 1 of the gearbox assembly, starting with attaching the gearbox housing plate to the engine, assembling the drive shafts, and attaching the gearbox housings to the housing plate/engine.

Stage 1 of the gearbox assembly

In this issue you start to put together the gearbox, when screwing the parts together, be careful not to overtighten the self-tapping screws.

Attaching the gearbox housing plate to the engine - Use the correct type screws, type 'G' screws are located at the left side and two type 'H' screws are located at the right-hand side of the housing plate, ensuring that the mount points are located.

Assembling the drive shafts and gearbox housings - The drive shafts and CV joints are marked Left & Right, fit the left drive shaft into the corresponding CV joint, then rotate the assembly so that the tab of the CV joint fits into the notch of the left gearbox housing, then turn the housing over and locate a screw, tighten but do not ovetighten. Repeat the process for the opposite drive shaft.

Attaching the gearbox halves to the housing plate - Slide the gearbox housings onto the gearbox housing plate already mounted on the engine, so that the groove along the back of the housings slot onto the edge of the housing plate.
Fit the two halves of the gearbox together and secure with masking tape, then gently prise apart the rear ends of the gearbox and fit the centre mount, (be sure to locate the narrower side at the front).

Then join the two halves of the gearbox permanently with four screws into the highlighted holes shown in the steps.

That's it for this issue, carefully store the assembly and any remaining parts.

Future issues:

Issue 24 - Contains the gearbox housing top, suspension arm stays, filters & screws; and has instructions for Stage 2 of the gearbox assembly, installing the gearbox filters, attaching the gearbox top, and adding the suspension arm stays.

Stage 2 of the gearbox assembly

Installing the gearbox filters - The two filters are slightly different, identify the left and right-hand filter, then locate into the corresponding two mounting holes in the gearbox site ensuring the pins are fully located in to the holes. Secure the filters in place with a self-tapping screw pass through the centre of the right-hand filter, take care not to overtighten the screw.

Attaching the gearbox top - Test fit the gearbox top onto the gearbox, check the contact points for gluing and that the two tabs at the wide end fit over the tabs on the gearbox.
Carefully apply a little ABS glue to the contact points and fit the top, then secure the top with masking tape until the glue has set.

Adding the lower suspension arm stays - Fit the left lower suspension arm stay into the left gearbox housing so that the two pins fit into the holes, then insert a 'D' type screw and tighten to about half way in.
Repeat the process for the opposite side.

That's it for this issue, carefully store the assembly and any remaining parts.
