Cook 250 - Endeavour cannon build competition entry.

So this cannon build is going to be called Sauerkraut. It was common for crews to name weapons, if they did or not on Endeavour i do not know but its a good bet. I have decided this cannon was named by her crew as Sauerkraut becaue it was a strange feature of Endeavours journey of discovery. Captain Cook believed that Sauerkraut was the answer to scurvy so encorae his seniors to eat it with every meal which encoraed the crew as a whole to eat it. Well we no know this to be nonsense his crews health was due to the regular stocking of fresh fruit and vegtables. But I can imagine the crew got sick of Sauerkraut LOL

The Build will start soon Cool

Considering your experience and past works you could go on holiday for 3 weeks and still smash this out of the part.

Best of luck.

Thanks for all the info Tomick.
As I said, I haven't really been around on the forum lately and sadly, I must have missed this one.
I read your post on the rules of the competition and I don't think I've made enough posts this year to qualify as an entrant but I'll be more than happy just to follow the build diaries of the entrants and I wish them all good luck.
Thanks again Mr T.
Happy building
David

Ok Got this bad boy up and running todayCool

Cannon

My first step was to chemically blacken the metal parts

whilst the chemicals are working their magic I gave both sides of the wood parts a sand with fine abrasive while still in the ply sheet.

The front Axel was removed and cleaned up first. These parts are CNC cut not laser cut so no scorch marks to remove, but wood finer left from the cutting process needs cleaning up. The two truck hubs were rounded off with a needle file first and then fine abrasive paper.

The first set of trucks where cleaned up and test fitted, I believe the trucks to be a little to thick so I have sanded mine down a bit.

With all the parts of the carriage cleaned up I did a test fit using the brass rod provided, all goodBigGrin

A 0.5mm drill bit provides a good fit for the eyebolts. The rear Axel and both sides are drilled out in the correct places for the eyebolts. I have also added larger holes for a correction to the kit parts.

Display Base

Like other I have followed the logic that the cannon looks at its best when rigged and therefore I need a section of deck.

I started by shaping the waterway plank using a shaping tool. this was then glued along a thin piece of wood sheet that will act as the substrate for the decking.

On the section I am doing there is one plank joint within the deck. I used a HB pencil for the caulking on 0.5mm for the deck.

A sigle plank was then fixed in place atop the waterway plank to form the inter bulwark. some 3x3mm strip was cut to approximate length to act as spacers for the outer bulwark planking which was then built up.

With the glue dry by lunch time I was able to saw, file and sand the bulwarks to the desired hight.. everything including the decks were then given a very fine sand.

Finally for today the ends of the display were primed down to tidy it all up and it was test fixed on the stand.
