To sail or not to sail Building with the sails in position will hide a lot of what I would like to see i.e. the rigging and masts, both of which I think will involve a lot of work and it seem a shame to hide it all so I have not yet finally made a decision although I will need to soon. I have been giving this some thought and there would appear to be a third option. Could we not furl the sails Any comments ideas would be appreciated Got a little time as I have just started issue 54, Planking the quaterdeck. Must say I am glad to get past the fixing of the guns to the deck finished with what little hair I have left still in place. Had to getup and walk away more than once. A small tip, make sure all the holes in the blocks are clear BEFORE you attatch them to the guns and the hull. Not easy to drill out once in position Have fun Current Build:- [color=blue]Stash Avro Lancaster (Full Kit)plus some extra issues I picked up at a good price [color=blue]Built:- Norman Catapult by Mantua,Roman Catapult by Mantua,HMS Victory,HMS Victory XSection,Focker DB1,Bismark,English Carronade Titanic Lifeboat,American Civil War Gatling,Hummer,Sopwith Camel F1,Occre Jupiter ,OcCre Wagon, Latina Arab Dhow, Eaglemass Orrery OcCre Rogers 119 [color=red][color=red]RB7,OcCre Missippi River Boat, Model Airways Fokker DR1 OcCre London L>C>C 106 Ugears Scrambler, Ugears Hexapod Explorer UGears Off-Road Vehicle

hi GilShapley,I will be installing sails, there has been talk already on this subject, but this is what I'm doing. when sails are mounted and befor the final rigging is done,I will then try furling to see which is best for seeing the decks/fighting tops ect.the ones selected will then be cut down so when furled they will not be too thick and look more scale like, and will roll more easily. hope this answers some of your questions. Hi there GilShapley, and welcome to the forum...I shall be fitting out my build with full sail...The yards and sails will be slightly askew, so that you can either see all the rigging with the sail facing slightly to the wall, and if I want to see more sail. just turn the model round...Happy building...
Current Builds: Deagostini HMS Victory: Deagostini HMS Sovereign of the seas. Completed Builds: Del Prado: HMAS Bounty: Hachette: RMS Titanic: Del Prado: Cutty Sark...

Hi Gill I will be building with sails. After all the Victory was a sailing ship, it would be like building a paddle steamer without paddles, or a war ship without propellers. Also my Grandson and Wife keep pestering me as to when the sails go on it. (I am only on issue 30) Still each to his own, some people may find it too hard to arrange the sails to show all the rigging details but I will give it a good go. You might wish you had changed your mind when you come to realise the amount of work needed to install sails Personally I think she looks good with or without sails, and for those wanting to replicate Victory as seen today, then 'bare spars' is the only way to go.

To Karl and other knowledgeable people on this excellent site. Will the sails be an extra buy, like the copper tiles or are they a part of the weekly buy? Also I would like to thank all the people that share there build diaries as it is a great wealth of information to us first time builders. hi Ian,I would think the sails will be included in the build,it is pictured with them on,in the advertisements,as tomick says,"their is extra work involved, and some of the rigging may have to be done in a different order, but as the mag and tomick will get you through this stage, you will need extra patience,so stick with it and you will have a wonderful model to be proud of. Very true Mr T. She will look good with or without sails, and if you want her to look like todays Victory then it needs bare spars, however my family wants her to look how she was in her hayday. I am finding this a fasinating subject. I would love to know how other builders and their families feel. Admin any chance of setting up two polls on here? " To sail or not to sail " One for the builders and one for their families. The results may suprise us all, and could be of help to Deag when planning future models. To Karl and Tomick.. Thanks for the info and great advice and encouragement .. I am on with the foremast at the moment and the scale of the Victory is looking great. The experience and patience of the work people are putting into the builds is so encouraging. Any one seen the channel called “Shed” ? they did a half hour series on Sunday after noon on garden model trains, first time I have ever seen this channel, just wondered if any one watches this channel and do they do a series on boat builds? I was very interested in the knowledge and design problems they would solve and the equipment they use, very similar to S. O.B s input and innovation on this site best regards, Ian Ian Builds in progress: E-type, HMS Victory, HMS Endeavour, HMS Soverein of the Seas Wish list: Bentley Blower http://forum.model-space...spx?g=posts&m=30439
