Great work on your planking Martyn. Planking is the best bit. Very therapeutic to do.

BigGrin Thanks for the comments guys Cool
I have just started to put on the second planking and I sent an email to Fred Hocker asking for the length of the planks and he kindly sent me the following lnfo. The planks are to scale, 130-140mm with a scarf joint not butted . The length of the planks very along the side of the hull and seem very random very like the deck .
Will post pictures when I've laid some more Cool
Hope this helps people following along

BigGrin Hi all and as promised here are some pictures of the second planking with the scarf joints. I was trying to work out how I was going to get the joints all the same and came up with this idea Cool the tool was made out of some spare plank left over from the first planking and some brass sheet left over from the S R s anchors. The brass was bent into shape and ca glued to the plank and a handle made out of a old paint brush fitted on top Cool the brass strip edge was sharpened with a file. The wood of the second planking is quite soft so the tool presses into it very easily and once marked I used a sharp pencil to highlight them , after that I followed the marks with a sharp scalpel so hopefully they will show up when I stain the hull Cool
Off to get on with some more planking
Cheers for looking

BigGrin Cheers for looking Alan and the comments Cool

I have been quite busy on the Vasa Cool . The scarf joints have been completed and the strakes glued and pined to the hull. To represent the bolts that hold the strakes on I have used track pins for model railways as these are a lot smaller and seem just right for the scale. I have deviate from the instructions and fitted the doors to the bow and main deck as I didn't like the metal frames and tops so these were covered with some cut down strip using some ca glue and after rubbing down and marking some nails with a sharp pencil they were stained with the same varnish as I used for the deck Cool I have also planked the inner bulwarks ready for staining which hopefully be done this week Cool

Cool Cheers for the comments guys Cool
A bit more work on the vasa . I have gone a little off the build instructions and have fitted the gratings with two covered with tarps Cool . The hull has been stained with a coat of natural oak and when dry two coats of dark oak as the real ship was painted with pitch and turpentine mix . The upper hull and stern was then painted red and the lower hull in white Cool
Now the fun begins painting all the little figures and decorations Blink ooh me poor old eyes Laugh
Thanks again for looking

BigGrin Cheers for all the comments guys Cool
A bit more work on the Vasa Cool
Looking at the instructions it says to fit the rudder later in the build but didn't like the idea of leaning the ship over with all galleries glued on while I fit it so decided to do it now Cool a bit of a heads up the rudder pintails are really hard to bend unless you soften them up first by heating them up over a gas flame to a cherry red and allowing to cool down slowly. I have also cut notches into the Rudder to move it closer to the stern post Cool . To save my old eyes from painting loads of carvings I built the stem and once completed made some heads to keep the crew happy Laugh . Next job making the message port that seems to have been forgotten. On the real ship this was part of the second whale up from the waterline and just past the last gunports on both sides. This allowed messages to be lowered to a small boat running along side Cool .
That's all for now .
Thanks for following

Really impressed with your scarf joint tool. That is really smart to give the effect of the joint without having to go to the lengths of actually making the joint for real.

Hope it all continues well.
Happy Modelling
