Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. I've been experiencing issues loading my original build diary, so to mitigate any future problems I have decided to start a new thread continuing my 1/48 scale U230 U-boat project. Here's the link to the original diary from which this continues: 1/48 scale U-Boat U230 [Part 1] Currently i'm in the process of modifying the conning tower to resemble the type 4 version as found on U230 from 1942 onwards. Not too much modelling has been done this week, but plenty of head scratching, pondering, measuring, staring into space as I try to figure out how to make the complex set of tapered curves found on the type 4 tower. Using a 1/72 donor model for guidance I have already made the 'footprint' for the tower and this week I began to make the lower platform, using the same technique as before; measuring the donor model and multiplying the measurements by a factor of 1.5 to correctly scale up from 1/72 scale to 1/48 scale. The attached photo shows the donor model lower platform, a drawing of it with dimensions and the scaled up version, all drawn out onto 0.5mm thick plastic sheet. Sticky Wickett attached the following image(s): Completed projects: 1/43 scale Bedford HA van / 1/43 scale MG TD sports car Current projects: 1/48 scale U-boat [U230] Future projects: 1/148 scale railway diorama / 1/50 scale R/C Volvo F89 logging truck / 1/148 scale Thunderbirds Fireflash

I then glued a thin strip of plastic around its edge. This acts as a locator for the tapered sides and allows the mahogany decking to butt up against it. The attached photo shows the strip glued in place. I have left it oversize for this picture so that you can better see it. It was then cut to length. Both versions side by side. As you see there is a lot more work to be done to convert my 1/48 scale version to build it up to resemble the 1/72 donor model next to it. Great update and nice work. I can see you have a lot of scratch building to do to get the correct profile.

Very nice work Phil. I usually take an evening when planning a part of the model, and yes a lot of the time is looking into thin air. Mark

Haven't posted any updates for a few weeks now due to the fact my flat has been like an oven in the evenings. Great weather, but not conducive to model making I've found, especially after a days work. This week has seen me continue with a bit more research on the conning tower and I should be posting an update next Thursday. Regards, Phil. Good evening from 'The Dockyard'! Well, it's been a while since my last post and i'll be totally honest, my flat has been like an oven during the hot spell and consequently I found it difficult to get into a model making frame of mind when I was sweating cobs! This weeks post covers the sporadic modelling I did do, much of it taking place over the last three weeks. Prior to that i spent many hours looking at photos of the real U230 and comparing them to the 1/72 scale donor model and my 1/48 scale version. Not all plain sailing [pardon the pun] as dimensions converted from 1/72 to 1/48 looked out of place and both versions neither looked like the only photo I have of the real U230's conning tower. This then provoked lots of time staring at the floor or out of the window as I tried to figure out a solution, double checking and triple checking everything as I went. These scenarios can't really be represented by photos, so the images you see here were borne from many hours of pondering. I wanted to get this stage of my build right from the start as any discrepancies would prove to be difficult to correct later down the line. So, hello all and it's nice to be back! The attached photo shows the location of the lower deck being marked out on the conning tower with a pencil clipped to an engineers square; just getting to this point where I was confident of the correct height can be summed up in a few words on here but involved lots of cross-checking and head scratching.
