This photo shows the finished cut. Again, a lot of time was spent ensuring I knew exactly where to finish the cut, with a little over run, so that the lower deck profile aligned correctly. At this juncture, the base of the conning tower was looking out of proportion with it's built up edges, so filed all these back flush with the main conning tower body. At this stage I could now slide the lower deck profile into place!  I fitted really nicely, however, it was far too wide! Again, many more hours of checking revealed the donor's dimensions at key points were larger than my 1/48 version. Time for a cuppa and a good long think! I could either build up my version to match the donor model, which would of required a lot of work and an unknown outcome, or I could make another lower deck profile to suit my model? I chose the latter, based on the fact the my donor model represents a U-boat that would of entered service already fitted with the Type IV tower when launched. U230 on the other hand entered service with a conning tower similar to the part-works supplied version and in 1942 was retro-fitted with a Type IV version. Based on that, I can only assume that extra plates were welded to the existing tower, unlike later versions where the design had been finalised and thus the overall shape of conning tower had changed. The next stage is going to prove just as tricky, if not more so, as I try to add tapered, curved pieces to connect the base with the lower deck. The first job was to make a small piece fitted to the rear of the tower from 0.5mm thick plastic sheet. I initially considered using 0.25mm thick plastic sheet as this is easier to manipulate, but decided against that idea as it could potentially collapse in on itself once I start to handle the model and add guard rails, lockers etc. I cut a piece out an spent a bit of time making sure it fitted exactly between the base and lower deck. The next step was to bend it to match the angles. I used a mug of boiling water to aid bending and various implements to use as formers. In the process of bending the sheet to form the acute angles it split. However, i wasn't too bothered as I knew I could fill the split once the piece was fitted.
