Hello fellow modelers, had some major issues with the Big Mercury. When placing the bulwarks on the ship, the bottom became rippled and bulged. The tops never lines up like the pictures and the videos by Amati, where totally different. So I took it back and exchanged for the HMS Pegasus. Took a days break and prepared everything needed and studied the plans in detail as I had done with the mercury. Firstly I Cut the keel out and soaked it in warm water for a few hours and clamped it for 48 hrs. While soaking I made up some 25x25mm blocks to square the frames. Prepared the stern frame 13 with the knees for the transom and made sure they were as the diagrams. However I noticed one was incorrectly numbered from the sheet. There are 4 knees the outmost ones have smaller tabs and the two inner have large tabs. TRalektra attached the following image(s):

The slot for frame 3 in the keel has a 1.5mm bit of ply, which I thought was of really bad design . I started glueing in the frames and checking the slots in the first deck went in easy and kept on doing this (took 3 days to complete). While waiting to dry I did some deck furniture and thought about how to plank the deck, the capstan looks really tacky so hopefully I can make one up or find one to buy. The gratings where very fiddly and frustrating at first, but became fun to do once I worked out a good method. I also noticed in the deck planking diagram a mast hole was missing. TRalektra attached the following image(s):

Thankyou for your encouraging comments. I have run into a small problem with the main deck. When I planked it with the 0.5x3mm strips it curled upwards and when pinning it in the planks and deck cracked. So I decided to make a deck from the other half template, with 6x2mm limewood strips and plank that with 0.5x3mm beech or silver ash strips (let me know your opinions on deck plank choices). I also added some walnut cross beams between the frames to support the deck and I will have to cut some for the gratings, but should be much stronger. The only thing I'm worried about is the deck cannon heights 0.8mm difference. I wish they had used at least 1.5mm or 1.7mm false deck. TRalektra attached the following image(s):

Personally, I would have probably glued the deck in place first and then applied the decking strips on top. As for the colour of you decking strips, I like the silver ash but its all down to your own personal choice of what you like best..... Regards Alan

I agree with you should have glued the deck down, good learning point for next time. Unfortunately the instructions said plank before glueing the false deck down.
