Issue 94 contains – MCU (in Case), Cable Clips, Fixing Screws, Nuts, Spring Washers.

Take the MCU, the two cable clips and four 2.3 x 6mm self-tapping screws.Fit one of the cable clips over the two mounting holes in the MCU case, noting which way the open end is facing. Fasten the cable clip to the case with two 2.3 x 6mm self-tapping screws. Repeat to fix the second cable clip in place.

The MCU case has two lugs on the back which are used to fix it to the circuit board bracket. The lugs go into the keyhole slots in the bracket and slide down to secure the MCU case.

Put the MCU case onto the circuit board bracket, ensuring it is the correct way up. Fit the two lugs into the round holes at the top of the keyhole slots and slide the case down the slots to lock it in place.

This Issue is now complete.

Issue 95 contains – Dome Spindle, Dome Motor Support Plate, Bearing Housing Halves, Dome Drive Shaft, Cable Retainer, Large Bearing, Small Bearing, Bearing Retainer.

Take the dome drive shaft, small bearing, bearing retainer and two 2 x 4mm screws. Fit the bearing into the recess in the dome drive shaft, then press the bearing down flush. Fit the bearing retainer on top ensuring that it fits flush. Fix the bearing retainer in place with two 2 x 4mm screws.

Take the bearing housing halves, large bearing, cable retainer, two 2.5 x 10mm flanged screws, nuts and spring washers. Fit the bearing into the recess at the end of one of one half of the housing. Align the other half of the housing and fit it over the bearing so the bearing is enclosed completely.

Holding the assembly together, fit the cable retainer over the round holes in the housing half, not the hexagonal sockets in the other half. Insert a 2.5 x 10mm flanged screw into one of the round holes and hold it in place while you fit a spring washer followed by a nut into the hexagonal socket on the other side. Hold the nut in place while you tighten the screw. Repeat on the other side. Both nuts should be flush with the sockets.

This Issue is now complete.

Issue 96 contains – Motor Cable, Motor Cover, Dome Drive Motor.

Take all the parts provided this time. Align the motor cover with the exposed circuit board on the end of the motor and clip it in place so that the socket fits into the opening in the cover.

Take the larger plug on the cable and align it with the socket, ensuring it is the correct way up, then press the plug firmly all the way into the socket.

Take the dome motor support plate from Issue 95, plus four 3 x 12mm screws and the large spring washers. Take the motor and the support plate and fit them together so the four holes in the motor case line up with those in the plate. Fit a washer to one of the screws, then fit the screw through the support plate and into the motor case and screw it finger tight. Repeat on the other three corners of the motor case, then tighten all four screws fully.

Note
The instructions on page 14, stage 13 tell you to use 3 x 12mm screws to attach the bearing housing. The correct screws to be used are the 2 x 6mm screws provided in stage 94.


Take the drive shaft assemblies from Issue 95, plus four 2 x 6mm screws and 3mm spring washers. Making sure that the four locating pins on the motor support plate fit into the holes in the bearing housing, fit the bearing housing in place ensuring it is the correct way up. Fit a washer to one of the screws, fit the screw through the bearing housing and into the support plate and screw it in finger tight. Repeat on the other three corners of the bearing housing, then tighten all four screws fully.

Slide the drive shaft into the bearing at the top of the housing, rotating it so that the square socket in the end lines up with the square shaft protruding from the motor gearbox so allowing the shaft to fit over it.

This Issue is now complete.

Issue 97 contains – Cable Ties, Camera, Lens Cover, Cable Labels, Fixing Screws.

In R2-D2 Issue 97, the sockets are designed so that the plugs will only fit one way round.

Be very careful to line up the slots in the side correctly.

Do not attempt to force a plug in the wrong way round, as this could damage the connections, and may even damage the circuit board or other components once power is applied.

An info insert is included with issue 97 which highlights this.


Fitting the cable labels.

The labels have a range of different letter codes. Take the sprue that has a label with the code L.H-IR on it. Cut the label off the sprue as close as possible to the end. Fold the label back on itself but do not clip the barbed end into the slot.

This is the label for the left head position sensor. Uncoil the cable attached to this sensor mounted on the top frame, making sure you don’t mix up left and right. Lay the end of the cable, near the plug, into the fold you made in the label. Press the label so that the clip closes around the cable to complete the job.

Carefully follow the instructions to attach labels to the rest of the cables.

Installing the battery box.

In order to complete the connections, you need to fit the battery box supplied with Issue 92. But as explained in that issue, you must not install the batteries until all the wiring is complete.

Take the battery box and cover provided with Issue 92, plus two 2.3 x 6mm self- tapping screws. Slide the cover onto the box, fitting the tabs into the matching slots. Secure the two tabs with the screws.

At this stage you can easily invert R2-D2 to reach the bottom access panel through which the battery box is fitted. Undo the two screws holding the access panel so you can slide it forward and flip it out of the way on the flexible plate. The screws will stay in the panel.

After turning R2-D2 the right way up, hold the battery box the correct way round, with the cables on the left, feed the cluster of cables in through the access panel and up through the centre of the bottom ring frame then slide the battery box itself up at an angle so it is supported by the battery bracket. Make sure the battery box goes all the way up the bracket and check that the leads do not get caught around the framework but come out at the correct point between the framework. Refit the access panel and secure it with the two screws. Now that R2-D2 is the right way up, you will need to use the special short screwdriver provided with Issue 92.

Take the red/black cable connected to the battery box (which you did not label) and take the similar unlabeled cable connected to the charging socket in R2-D2’s bottom panel. Fit the plug on the charging socket cable into the socket on the battery box cable and press it all the way home so that the barbed clip clicks into place.

Making the connections.

All the cables you have been labeling plug into the sockets in the MCU or sensor control board, matching up the letter codes. (The other sockets are not used until a later Issue, when you fit the front and back panel, dome motor and the dome itself.)Make the connections in the order shown in the instructions. This will avoid tangling the cables, some of which need to be carefully routed.

Installing the cable run.

On page 13, stage 10B of the instructions the picture show the R.F-M cable being fitted to the MCU. The plugs that fit into the sockets can only fit one way round and when fitted correctly the blue wires will be on the outside of the socket not the inside as shown in the picture.

You will need to remove the battery box to install the batteries, so check that you haven’t snagged its cluster of cables. Undo the access panel you fitted earlier and slide out the box. Make sure the box will come right out, giving you access to the two cover screws. If you can’t do this because the cables are tight, you may need to reroute them and plug them back into their sockets.

Fit the first cable tie to secure the cluster of cables from the right leg, centre foot sensor C.F-S and the motor control cable M-C to the frame. Pull the cable tie tight and clip off the surplus. Route the rest of the motor control cable M-C around the curved frame and secure it with another cable tie.
Repeat the process on the opposite side, using the tie to secure the left leg cables and the sensor control cable S-C. Run the rest of the sensor control cable S-C around the frame and secure it with another tie.Secure both head position sensor cables to the bottom of the upright to complete the job.

This Issue is now complete.
