Hi fellow modellers,

Historic F1 Build Entry

I know it's a bit of a late entry, and not the one i had originally planned to build, but, this will be my entry for the historic F1 Build competition. I had planned to build a Lotus, but as we already have a couple entered, i thought i would choose something a bit different, hence the Italeri Alfa Romeo 179-179C BigGrin. Come on, who hasn't wanted to own an Alfa ThumpUp BigGrin

Alfa Romeo participated in Formula One motor racing as both a constructor and engine supplier sporadically between 1950 and 1987, and later as a commercial partner since 2015. The company's works drivers won the first two World Drivers' Championships in the pre-war Alfetta: Nino Farina in 1950; and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1951. Following these successes Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula One.

During the 1960s, although the company had no official presence in the top tier of motorsport a number of Formula One teams used independently developed Alfa Romeo engines to power their cars. In the early 1970s, Alfa provided Formula One support for their works driver Andrea de Adamich, supplying adapted versions of their 3-litre V8 engine from the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 sports car to power Adamich's McLaren (1970) and March (1971) entries.

In the mid-1970s, Alfa engineer Carlo Chiti designed a flat-12 engine to replace the T33 V8, which achieved some success in taking the 1975 World Sportscar Championship. Bernie Ecclestone, then owner of the Brabham Formula One team, persuaded Alfa Romeo to supply this engine free for the 1976 Formula One season. Although the Brabham-Alfa Romeos' first season was relatively modest, during the 1977 and 1978 World Championships their cars took 14 podium finishes, including two race victories for Niki Lauda.

Here is what Italeri say about the marque 'The Alfa Romeo 179 is a racing car which was used by the presigious Italian brand Alfa Romeo for the Formula 1 competitions from 1979 to 1982. It was developed to replace the Alfa Romeo 177 and it made its debut at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in 1979 in front of its Italian fans. It was equipped with a 1291 cc 12-cylinders natually aspirated Alfa Romeo 1260 engine. There are a lot of notable Formula one drivers that brought the Alfa Romeo 179, and it’s evolution 179C, on the GP tracks as Mario Andretti, Andrea De Cesaris and Bruno Giacomelli that achieved a pole position in the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in 1980.'

Kit quality looks quite good at first glance, will delve deeper later. it's a relatively new kit, launched earlier this year, so i have high hopes for this one!
Here is The Modelling News'link to the kit:
http://www.themodellingn...l-kits-with-sprues.html

The kit includes:
Two versions available for one model
Steering wheels and working suspension
Slick tires
Highly detailed model
Removable cowling

And here are photos of the kit and contents

Finally made a start on the beastie! first of all: impressions of the kit.
I have to say i am really impressed so far. The sprues are pre-coloured, so if youwish, you can build the running gear, engine etc unpainted. Even the body shell is a nice glossy white!
i like the moveable steering with a working rack and pinion. The springs are functional as well. There's a lot going for this kit, and if anyone fancies a go, i would say definitely go for it! Don't think you will be disappointed. That doesn't mean it will be without it's chalenges though (having read the reviews on this kit), but for me, so far so good!

Here are some teaser photos

Thanks for your comments, and looking in guys BigGrin
As you can see, i've painted a few more items, and added master cylinders for the brake and clutch, along with their respective pipes. Not sure if i like them black, so may paint them white for more realism. Same with the radiators, i can't decide if i like them black, or should paint them silver, like the tub. but that's a decision for another day Confused

Looking really good.
Nice to see this kit being built. There's a shortage of 1/12 F1 kits these days.
