Vasa Pack 6 – Stages 54 - 65
Stage 54 Contents: Wooden Strips and Decoration
Fit 2 complete rows of 0.5x5mm wooden strips to the port side of the hull, above the last row fitted in the previous stage and ensuring you maintain the stagger points between the strips. The strips at the bow will require to be tapered as set out in steps 1-2 of the instructions. Follow steps 3-4 of the instructions to add a further 2 rows of wooden strips. Now add the same 4 rows to the other side of the hull.
Follow steps 6-9 of the instructions to add a further 4 rows of wooden strips. Repeat the process on the other side of the hull. Remove any flash or burrs from the decoration C34, then apply a coat of metal primer and leave to dry. Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the decoration then store carefully until needed. Painted decoration for this build stage will be shown at the end of this pack.

Stage 55 Contents: Wooden Strips and Decoration. Tip: – The aim of steps 1-5 of this build stage is to ensure the top edge of the 4th row of strips added, finishes 32mm down from the top of the stern bulwark. Due to slight variance of how each modeller constructs, you may find you need to adjust the width of your plank rows to ensure the top edge ends on the 32mm mark. It is also important the flow of planks is maintained along the complete length of the hull. If you adjust the width of a strip then you must adjust the complete row to the same width to keep the flow of the planks uniform. You may also find the insertion of all of the wedged shape pieces in the stern area may not be needed. Outlined below is how this was achieved with this build. Draw a line at the stern 32mm down from the top of the stern bulwark. Add a complete row of 0.5x5mm wooden strips to the port side of the hull. (I reduced the width of this row of strips to 4mm). Continue to adhere to the stagger points between the strips. Add another complete row of strips, leaving a wedged shaped gap of 90x3.5mm at the stern. When dry, create a wedge shape strip to fill the gap left between the rows at the stern. Add the next row of wooden strips to the port side of the hull. (I reduced the width of this row of strips to 4mm). Now add a 4th row of strips, the flow of this row should end with the top edge finishing on the 32mm line marked earlier. Complete the planking up the side of the wall at the bow. Fit another strip from the forward edge of the wall amidships, ending the strip in line with the forward edge of the furthest wall at the stern, then add another strip to complete the row. Mark a line along the strips just fitted, 4mm from their bottom edge. Place 2 strips from the forward edge of the wall amidships aft to the transom, aligning the join with the edge of the wall shown in step 10 of the instructions. The bottom edge of the strips should be positioned along the line marked in the previous step. Then mark a line along the strips 4mm from their bottom edge. Follow steps 12-15 of the instructions to add another 3 rows of strips to the stern area. Stage 56 Contents: Wooden Strips and Decorations.
Add another 3 complete rows of wooden strips to the stern area of port side of the hull, as outlined in steps 1-6 of the instructions.
Now repeat the steps in Stage 55 and steps 1-6 of this stage on the starboard side of the hull.
Recover the decoration C24 from Stage 55 and C38 supplied with this stage. Remove any flash or burrs with a file then apply a coat of metal primer and leave to dry. Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the decorations then store carefully until needed. Painted decorations for this build stage will be shown at the end of this pack. Stage 57 Contents: Wooden Strips and a Wooden Strip Tool.
Trim the aft edges of the strips so they are flush with the transom, then trim the tops of the strips to match the strips underneath and the tops of the frames. Prepare 3 strips of 0.5x5mm, 170, 200 and 250mm in length and glue them to the port side of the keel. There should be a gap of around 2.5mm at the stern, create a wedged shaped piece to fit this gap. Now cover the stern post with wooden strips, these strips need to run in a horizontal direction as shown in step 5 of the instructions.
Now shape a strip as outlined in step 6 of the instructions and glue it to the side of the stem. Continue gluing lengths of strips up the stem, again these need to run in a horizontal direction. When dry, carefully cut away the excess parts of strips that are overlapping the keel. Repeat these steps to cover the keel, stern post and stem on the other side of the hull.
Recover the decoration C39 from stage 56, remove any burrs or flash and apply a coat of metal primer then leave to dry. Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the decoration then store carefully until needed. Painted decoration for this build stage will be shown at the end of this pack. Stage 58 Contents: Wooden Strips. Use 0.5x5mm strips to cover the outer edges of the keel, stern post and stem. Make sure to cover the stem only up to the point where it juts out. Cut out all the gun ports then clean up the edges of the ports taking care not to enlarge the ports during the clean-up process. Using fine grade sandpaper, sand the surface of the hull to remove any irregularities. Do not sand the overlapping strips. Tip: The second layer of planking strips applied are very thin so take care not to sand through them during the sanding process. Now draw a line along the port side of the hull underneath the lower gun ports, starting at 25mm below the top of the stem and ending 29mm below the top of the lower section of the transom. Step 7 of the instructions shows where the line should be at the bow, amidships and at the stern. Retrieve the tool supplied with Stage 57 and locate the groove ‘B’ cut out. Slide groove ‘B’ along one side of a 2x4x300mm wooden strip; this will round off the sharp edges of the strip. Sand the strip smooth then repeat this process for the rest of the 2x4x300mm strips supplied with this stage. Now repeat the process using groove ‘A’ of the tool and shape one side of the 26 (2x5x295mm) strips supplied with stages 57 and 58. Glue a row of 2x4mm wooden strips along the port side of the hull to create one of the strakes. The top edge of the strips should be positioned up against the line previously drawn. The forwardmost strip should be positioned up against the stem and end 15mm aft of the 5th gun port, the middle strip should end 15mm aft of the 11th gun port. The aft strip should overlap the transom slightly.
Glue 2 rows of 2x5mm wooden strips in place under the strake fitted in the last step, there should be a 4mm gap between all the rows of strips. The stagger points between the joins should be in line with those of the first row. Glue a further row of 2x4mm wooden strips into place, 4mm under those of the previous row with the joins lining up as before. Now repeat the process to add the same 4 rows of wooden strips to the other side of the hull.

Stage 59 Contents: Wooden Strips, Anchor, Anchor Stock and Anchor Ring.
Mark a line 16mm above the top strake along the port side of the hull. Glue a row of 2x5mm prepared strips on top of the line marked in the previous step, the joins between the strips should be positioned 15mm aft of the 4th and 10th bottom row gun ports. Now glue a row of 2x4mm prepared strips 4mm above the row previously fitted, matching the joins.
Mark a line 19mm along the port side of the hull, above the row previously fitted. Glue a row of 2x5mm prepared strips, (not 2x4mm as shown in the Step 5 image of the instructions), on top of the line marked in the previous step, the joins between the strips should be positioned 15mm aft of the 6th and last upper row gun ports. Now glue a row of 2x4mm prepared strips 4mm above the row previously fitted, matching the joins. Repeat the process to fit the same 4 rows to the other side of the hull. Remove any flash or burrs from the anchor. Apply a coat of metal primer and when dry paint it a metallic grey colour (RAL 5011). Separate the two halves of the anchor stock and smooth the anchor stock halves. Glue the two halves together then sand them to smooth the join. Smooth the underside of the stock so that the ends taper by 1mm, then paint the anchor stock with a dark brown paint (RAL 3007). Alternatively, you can apply dark wood stain. Glue the stock onto the top of the anchor with the tapered edge facing down. The stock must be at 90 degrees to the shank.
Give the anchor ring a coat of metal primer and leave to dry, then paint the metallic black. Move the ends of the ring away from each other to open it and pass the ring through the hole in the top of the anchor shank, then close the ring.

Stage 60 Contents: Rudder, Hinges and Nails.
Remove the rudder from the fret and sand the edges smooth. Mark a line 40mm from the bottom of the rudder, the line must be perpendicular to the rudder. Glue a short length of 0.5x5mm wooden strip up against the line just drawn then continue to add lengths of strips to the bottom of the rudder.
Now glue lengths of strips up to the top of the rudder and leave to dry. When dry, turn the rudder over and cut away the excess strips. Now repeat the process to cover the other side of the rudder, cutting away the excess when dry.
Now cover all the edges of the rudder with 0.5x5mm wooden strips, then sand the edges of the rudder smooth.
Remove the hinge parts RH1, RH2 and RH7 from the fret and file the edges smooth. Bend the centre of one RH1 hinge to a curve by shaping it over a 2mm drill bit. Fold the hinge out at the first lines then back in at the second lines, as shown in step 11 of the instructions. Paint the hinge with metallic grey (RAL5011) or darken with some burnishing fluid. Repeat the process with the other hinge parts RH1, RH2 and RH7. Part RH7 does not need to be shaped. Use a sanding block to smooth the aft ends of the port strakes fitted in the previous stage. The aft ends of the strakes should be flush with the transom. Repeat the process on the starboard side of the hull. This stage is now complete. Stage 61 Contents: Grating Frames, Wooden Strips and Grating Strips. Separate two G1 and two G2 pieces from the fret and sand them smooth. Glue the four pieces together ensuring all the corners are set at right angles. When dry, smooth the outer edges of the frame then create two more frames the same way. Cut a grating strip into two sections with five notches, then cut a second grating strip into one eight-notch section. Prepare 24 sections with 5 notches and 15 sections with 8 notches. Fit one 8 notch and one 5 notch pieces together, engaging the notches at the end of each. Then fit another 8 notch and 5 notch pieces at the other ends of the first pair to create a frame. Adjust the corners so that they are all at right angles, then apply glue to the joins and leave to dry. Glue a further six 5 notch sections into the notches in the two 8 notch parts. When dry, turn the grating over and glue three more 8 notch sections into the notches of the 5 notch sections.
Test fit the grating inside the frame assembly. If it doesn’t fit then sand the edges until it does, glue it in place. This part will now be referred to as ‘GA’. Repeat these steps to create two more framed gratings ‘GA’.
Now cut grating strips into eight sets of eight notches and of four notches, and into three sets of three sections with four notches. Glue two 8 notch and 4 notch parts together at right angles as you did before. Assemble the grating using six 4 notch sections and two more 8 notch sections.
Separate two G1 pieces and Two G3 pieces from the fret and sand them smooth. Glue the four parts together ensuring the internal corners are positioned at right angles. Test fit the assembled grating into the frame, sanding the edges until the grating fits flush, then glue it into place. This assembly will now be referred to as ‘GB’. Now repeat these steps to make another framed grating ‘GB’.
Use groove ‘F’ of the tool from stage 57 to shape a 2x2mm wooden strip supplied with this issue, then sand the strip smooth. Glue the three frames gratings ‘GA’ with the two gratings ‘GB between them, as shown in step 16 of the instructions. When dry, sand the edges flush.
Cut four lengths of the previously prepared 2x2mm wooden strip to frame the grating assembly. The ends of the strips should be cut to a 45 degree angle. Glue the strips around the assembly. Stage 62 Contents: Grating Strips and Decorations
Remove any burrs or casting flash from decorations C41 and C42 supplied with this stage, apply a coat of metal primer and leave to dry. Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the decoration then store carefully until needed.
Painted decorations for this build stage will be shown at the end of this pack. Now cut grating strips into twelve sets of eight notches and four notches, then cut four sets of three sections with four notches. Glue two 8 notch and two 4 notch parts together at right angles. Adjust the corners if necessary, to ensure that they are all at right angles, then apply glue to the joins and leave to dry. Glue six more 4 notches pieces in the two 8 notch parts then when dry, turn the assembly over and glue two more 8 notch pieces into the 4 notch parts. Repeat these steps to create two more gratings. Stage 63 Contents: Grating Frames and Grating Strips.
Separate two G1 and two G5 pieces from the fret and sand them smooth. Glue the G1 and G5 pieces together ensuring all the corners are set at right angles, then smooth the outer edges of the frame. Now create two more frames in the same way.
Retrieve the three grating assemblies from Stage 62. Test fit a grating inside the frame just assembled, sand the edges if needed to ensure a good fit then glue it into place. This part will now be referred to as ‘GC’. Repeat to create a total of three framed gratings ‘GC’. Separate two G1 and two G4 pieces from the fret and sand them smooth. Glue the four parts together ensuring that the internal corners are all at right angles. Smooth the outer edges of the frame. Create another frame in the same way.
Cut grating strips into 12 sections with 8 notches and 12 with 6 notches. Then cut two more strips into six notch sections. Fit one 8 notch and one 6 notch piece together, engaging the notches at the end of each. Then fit another 8 notch and 6 notch pieces to create a frame. Adjust the corners so that they are all at right angles then apply glue to the joins and leave to dry. Fill up the rest of the notches with more 8 notch and 6 notch pieces.
Test fit the grating inside the frame previously assembled. If it doesn’t fit, sand the edges and then glue into place. This part will now be referred to as ‘GD’. Repeat to create two framed gratings ‘GD’. Separate two G1 and two G6 pieces from the fret and sand them smooth. Glue the four parts together ensuring that the internal corners are positioned at right angles. Smooth the outer edges of the frame. Now cut three lengths of 2x5mm wooden strip to fit inside the frame just assembled, then glue the strips inside the frame. This part will be referred to as ‘GE’.
You should now have 3 x GC, 2 x GD and 1 x GE assembled frames.

Stage 64 Contents: Wooden Strips, Grating Strips, Capstan Parts and Wooden Dowel.
Remove the capstan parts from the fret and sand the edges smooth. Sand the wooden dowel to remove any roughness or splinters, then cut it into two lengths, one 32mm and one 23mm. Keep the 23mm length to one side for the moment.
Test fit the dowel into part CP1, adjust the fit if necessary and then glue into place, ensuring they are at 90 degrees to each other. Place part CP2 over the dowel and push it down until it is pressed against the CP1, glue into place ensuring the orientation is as shown in step 4 of the instructions. Insert one of the CP5 parts into one of the holes in CP2, adjust the fit if necessary and then glue into place up against and aligned with the dowel. Test fit and glue a second CP5 part into CP2, opposite the first. Test fit and glue another two CP5 parts between the first two, on either side, then test fit and glue the remaining four parts CP5 into the free holes in CP2. Lower part CP3 over the dowel and onto the tops of the CP5 parts, making any adjustments needed then glue it into place. Now test fit and glue part CP4 onto the dowel, 2mm above part CP3. This part will now be referred to as CPA. Cut one 8 notch section and one 4 notch section from a grating strip. Prepare 12 of each section in this way. Now cut another grating strip into three 4 notch sections, repeat with three more grating strips to make a total of twelve 4 notch sections.
Build a frame with two 8 notch and two 4 notch sections, ensuring the corners are set at 90 degrees to each other. Glue two more 8 notch sections and six more 4 notch sections into the frame to create the grating. Create two more of these gratings in the same way.
Recover the tool supplied with stage 57. Using groove ‘F’, shape three 2x2x300mm wooden strips (supplied with this stage)

Stage 65 Contents: Wooden Strip, Capstan Parts, Grating Frames and Grating Strips.
Remove the capstan parts from the fret and smooth their edges. Recover the short dowel piece from Stage 64 and cut it to 20mm long then glue the dowel into the capstan part CP1 ensuring the parts are at right angles to each other. Test fit part CP2 over the dowel and push it down until it is pressed against part CP1, glue into place matching the position shown in step 2 of the instructions.
Insert one CP5 part into one of the holes in CP2, adjust the fit if necessary, then glue it into place in line with the dowel. Now test fit and glue a second CP5 part into CP2, opposite the first one. Then test fit and glue another two CP5 parts between the first two on either side of the dowel. Test fit and glue the remaining four CP5 parts into the free holes in CP2. Lower part CP3 over the dowel and onto the tops of the CP5 parts, make any adjustments needed, then glue it into place. Test fit and glue part CP4 onto the dowel, positioned 2mm away from CP3 and flush with the top of the dowel. Now round one side of CP6 then glue it onto the dowel top and part CP4. Cut eight 18mm lengths of 1.5x1.5mm wooden strip supplied with this stage and shape the last 12mm from the end of each length to a taper. Glue the square end of one of the bars just prepared, into the space between parts CP3 and CP4. Align the bar with the corner of the base, as shown in step 11 of the instructions. Glue a second bar into the space between CP3 and CP4, opposite the first bar. Now glue two more bars into the gap at right angles to the first two, then glue the four remaining bars between the existing ones. The bars should all be positioned at 45 degrees from each other. This part will now be identified as CPB.
Remove six G1 and six G5 parts from the grating fret and glue them together to create two grating frames, ensure the internal corners set at 90 degrees.
Now recover the three grating assemblies from Stage 64 and glue them into the three frames assembled from the previous step, adjust the fit if necessary. This stage is now complete. Carefully store the assemblies, place any unused parts in a stage labelled bag.
