Hey all, I’ve taken on the HMS victory for my first ever boat build, and I’m agonising over the different options for the completed model. I’ve finished the hull planking and I’m about to install the rear gallery (Stage 40). Ive decided not to have the cutaway. The stained model in the manuals looks beautiful, but I’ve decided to do the Trafalgar colours, mainly to cover for the lack of skill apparent in some parts of the hull Thinking ahead, it looks like there’s another two major choices to make: Copper Tile or paint the hull Standing or Running rigging I was wondering if anyone could post pictures of their finished models with the different finishes (Apologies if this is done somewhere else on the forum, I haven’t found it). I’ve not seen a decent image of the finished model with the copper tiling yet. My wife has been wonderful and bought the tile pack, but I’m happy to exclude them if I think the painted option looks better. Thanks all!

Hi Dan and welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your time with us. Great to hear you've taken on building this iconic ship, its a build I'm sure you're going to love putting together. In answer to your questions there are a number of places I would recommend you take a close look at, these will give you an idea of how she will look with the different options you are looking at. The first place is to study the Official Build, this has been done as per the instructions with the painted hull and in the Standing Rigging, no sails configuration.... The Official Build can be found here: https://forum.model-spac...topics&f=17&p=2
There is an excellent members diary showing a first class example of how she'll look should you wish to go down the lower hull tiling look. https://forum.model-spac...sts&t=6074&p=29
There is also a very good topic on tiling the hull, includes detailed instructions you can download.... https://forum.model-spac...aspx?g=posts&t=2981
Another members build diary I'd ask you to check out is this one, beautiful build complete with sails..... https://forum.model-spac...sts&t=3193&p=15
If you look at the members build diaries on the Victory you'll see lots of additional builds giving a mass of information for you to digest..... Hope this helps.. Regards Alan

Hi Dan all good questions that i also have been asking myself. the options i have chosen are 1. painted trafalger colours 2. no tiles 3. no cutaway 4 and a little different here with furled sails I am at stage 15 and hit a hurdle which i am overcoming. not the ship... (other life stuff) so have been a little slow off the mark post up a build diary so we can watch your progress. Erik Current builds HMS Victory Endeavour longboat

Hi Dan,
in my opinion - comparing tiling and copper-painting the hull - the tiling looks way better.
What you have to consider is how much time you want to spend - because you have to apply over 2000 tiles!
It took me about 1 1/2 years to finish it (with some intermissions to regenerate the nerves).
As for the sail/no sails question - there are many discussions in several modelling-forums you can browse - discussing the pros and cons.
But ultimately it`s just your choice - there are many excellent models in both versions. Greetings, Walter

Welcome to the forum Dan. I am building the Victory (between other projects) and went for the tiling option. It is time consuming but well worth the the effort as I believe it looks so much better than painting the hull.
As for rigging, it is entirely your choice. I usually go for the full sail version on period ship models (when there is one) which I will be doing with the Victory.
Enjoy your build whichever options you choose to go with.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and the words of encouragement.
Alan, those build articles are perfect, thank you!
Time is not an issue for me at all, given the enthusiastic response I will be going ahead with the tiling.
I’ve been taking pictures as I go along and will put them into a build diary as suggested. My hull isn’t looking as shameful as I expected, I have two places with 1mm wide gaps that I need to fill. Will keep you all posted.
Thanks again.
