Hello Shipmates,

Welcome to my build diary for HMS Hood. I have to say I'm so looking forward to building this ship, the finished model will be absolutely stunning.

HMS Hood as a subject evokes so much emotion in whatever medium is chosen, whether it be print, photo, art or model. She was/is a beautiful ship, there's no denying it. I have absolutely no doubt that if she had survived the war, she would have been preserved for the nation. Even though her clash with the Bismarck cut short her career, she lives on as 'the pride of the Royal Navy: The mighty Hood'.

As usual, any thoughts, questions and constructive criticism welcome, and I hope you will enjoy as much as I.

Regards BigGrin

Thanks Mike and S2kSean for the welcome, I'm just getting the diary's ready for when I start, which won't be long. I'm so looking forward to building this iconic ship.

Ok! Well there was no great drama with the first stage of this build, one thing I have noticed about the parts is that they are very high quality and accurately cut.

The parts came away from the spars very easily, the hardness of the wood is excellent.

The first two ribs under construction:

A montage of images taken from different angles showing the ribs fitted to the base of section 1.

Well there you have have it for week 1, this model goes together very nicely, but I'm sure it will get harder. I did have one question though, why the spars on the ribs tops are unglued? I sure the answer will become clear unless anyone knows. That's all for now shipmates, happy building. BigGrin

Hi Glenn I hope you dont mind me saying that you will need a Dry Dock board to screw each Keel board down, this will stop any twisting of the ply wood (you will see this in my build diary)Draw a line down the centre of the board and also down the centre of each keel board, this will mean when you screw ech part down it will be straight and true and therefore each part you fix to it will be the same.

Your build looks greatBigGrin Cool

Hi Mike,

Of course I don't mind you saying that, if we are serious about building models which I think we are, otherwise we wouldn't be a member of this forum. You expect, and it is right, to be challenged by your peers, its how we grow and learn. BigGrin

As for the build board, (yes I had remembered this time, don't faint! Laugh LOL ) I think I will have to go to B&Q for this one, as this model is so big that my existing supplies of build board are too small. But thank you for the heads up anyway though. In fact I think it is you that has reminded me about a build board on all my builds because I kept forgetting..LOL Anyway a big muchas gracias to you my friend for reminding me once again. Its so great when you get a bunch of guys building the same model, looking at each others work provides you with inspiration for your own model, don't you think? Thanks for the post Mike and I look forward to seeing you work sir. BigGrin

Dear all,

Just a little update on my hood build!
I was storing parts intending to continue the hood build later. Unfortunately a serious mishap befell my parts and I have lost the lot. I will have to therefore look to eBay to see if I can purchase a complete set at some point, and therefore the build is regrettably on indefinite hold till I get more parts! Crying

Hi Glenn, so sorry to hear of you mishap with this build as I was following with a great deal of interest especially as I have this kit in storage..... I know when I decided to take on the build I ordered all of the back issues I could but was still a few missing, even now I am still missing issue 24 but I know it took me a fair amount of time and effort to get everything I needed to complete the build..... Wish you all the best in trying to replace the parts you need.....

Best regards

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the support there. I keep looking on e-bay but parts for the Hood seem in short supply. The series must be close to finishing now or has finished (I haven't looked). I will just have to be patient and hope a kit comes up for sale! Cool

Hi Glen,
Sorry to hear of your troubles. At the moment we are up to issue 124 out of 140 so no quite finished yet. Have you tried looking in the hachette partworks online shop for back issues. Would I believe be a cheaper option for you. Here is the link http://www.hachettepartw...ucts/9338-the-hood.aspx Hope this helps.

I have seen this complete kit of the hood come up for sale on e-bay. But the buy it now price seems way too high. Also the current bid is about nearly £260 and you would have to arrange for a courier to transport adding more cost because the seller won't ship. I suspect his reserve price will be nearer the £600 mark.

This seems really expensive? I keep looking every day for a kit so I can try and get my Hood build back on track. I'll be honest, I cannot see anyone paying that price for it? What do you think guys? A fair price? or over priced?

Anyway here's the link:

Glenn

It's one of those situations that the seller wants to recover as much money as possible invested in the collection which I can guess is understandable.

Looking at the link it has received a number of bids and also has a number of people watching.

I guess it all depends on how deep someone's pockets might be and how badly they want this item. I have seen what I feel are some crazy prices on eBay being paid for items.

I was looking the other day and someone paid I think near on £27 for the how to build the airfix typhoon book. Odd thing being the book is fairly new and sells for around £12.95 plus about £2 postage.

All I can suggest is bookmark your eBay search so at least any new additions added for this model will flag to you and hopefully at some point you may just get yourself a bargain.

Happy Modelling

Just looked on ebay - the full asking price is £700 which, when in the scheme of things at and average of £5.99 per issue is not bad really but it is a lot to shell out in one go.

Hi Glen
Have you tried the Hachette website, I have purchased issue's for the Hood from them. It's worth a go
