Has anyone tried to add an external speaker or powered subwoofer to get some more realistic sound?

no but it would be very easy using a DFplayer or Adafruit mini sound board.

All you would need to do is record some audio from a real D51 and load it onto the DFplayer and connect it to a speaker and a switch

I can post how to do it if you want.
