Looking forward to seeing your build. It will be interesting to see if this model differs from the original release.

JAMES BOND ASTON MARTIN DB5 – 23rd JULY 2019

OVERVIEW

Well after what seems a massive delay in getting this one my first set of parts arrived today.

My initial email confirmation of parts sent was on 20th June but despite numerous calls, Facebook posts it became obvious customer services at Eaglemoss is sadly lacking.

I was all set to cancel this when I phoned them Friday last but having been told they had shipped parts the previous day decided to hold on – and please I did.

I am hoping this is a one off and that from now on everything will run smoothly (ever the optimist)

I missed out on this the first time around but do recall seeing the issues many builders had with the paint colour when they switched manufacturers and I believe the doors were one of the issues were the shade did not match the rest of the paintwork – here’s hoping that does not happen this time around.

The other change to this part work is that the original was spread over 86 weeks and this time its over 100 weeks. No idea despite asking what the extended weeks offer. We could be cynical and say reduced parts in each mailing to keep this one going for as long as possible but hoping that is not the case.

Either way its one that I have been after for so long and have hoped for its relaunch so let’s get cracking.

WHATS IN THE BOX

Well the first thing that surprised me was the size of the box. Looking at it Its much larger than any of the part work boxes I have received for other builds (that may change as this build continues) so certainly a surprise.

Inside the box are PACKS 1 & 2 all cellophane sealed along with the Pack Magazine.

The first thing that struck me was the printed quality and paper used on these magazines – its does look really smart and a quality looking publication.

PICTURES 1 THROUGH 4

This gives you a view of the magazine content.

Build instructions seem to follow a “blueprint” style format rather than the traditional photographic pictures we are used to following in some other part works.

As the build progresses it will be interesting to see if this leads to any confusion as to where parts fit.

PICTURES 5 & 6

And here we get the first of the “FREE GIFTS” in the shape of a 3 page fold out poster showing the completed model full size. We have had these sorts of posters with such things as Sovereign of the Seas so not quite sure how Eaglemoss can claim this a “FREE GIFT” but there you go.

I do know on its original release one of the gifts was a rather nice Aston Martin book (not part of the offering this time around).

PICTURES 7 THROUGH 12

And here are the parts as packed that you get with PACK 1.

One observation I have made (and hoping there is nothing sinister here) is that some of the parts are packed on RED card backers and some on BLACK card backers. It appears at this stage to be the silver bodywork parts on the BLACK cards.

PICTURE 13

One thing I have picked up examining the packs is that most of them have dust or “grime” actually on the part. In this picture that mark is on the inside of the pack not the outside.

May be nothing to worry about but we shall see once I break into these.

So that cover off my overview of Pack 1. Next stage is to start breaking down the parts and starting the build.

JAMES BOND ASTON MARTIN DB5 – 23rd JULY 2019

THE BUILD

Well initial excitement has turned somewhat sour and have a bit of disappointment with the parts so far. I will highlight the issues as I update this diary but it basically means customer services at EAGLEMOSS will be getting a call in the morning

PART 001

PICTURES 1 THROUGH 6

In parts set 1 we get:

The Front Grill
Aston Martin Badges x 2
Bulletproof Screen

The Grill is chromed plastic and appears to be ok. Similar with the 2 badges.

PRODUCT ALERT: However here we come to the first issue – The bulletproof screen.

The varnish on the back of the screen is patchy – not easy to pick up in the picture.

As to the front of the screen it looks to me as if its been propped up while the varnish has been drying as there is a Thick varnish line as I have tried to indicate in the pictures.

None of these parts are used at this stage and are stored away until such time they are required.

PART 002

In Parts Set 2 we get:

Top Seat Base
Bottom Seat Base
2 x Seat brackets
Front Seat Back
Rear Seat Back
2 x screws
Front Bumper
Rotating Number Plate

PICTURES 7 THROUGH 16

The seat does have the look of being soft but I can advise it is hard plastic.

The seat base top and bottom are simple press fitted together. Once together you will struggle to part the pieces so no glue advised or needed here.

We then JOGGLE the left and right seat brackets into place on the seat base before lining up the screw holes with the front seat back.

You only get 2 screws with this so no spares as with some other part work builds. Screw the seat back to the brackets paying attention to the fact that you are putting screws into plastic so exercise care.
This is then finished off by press fitting the Back of the back seat into place.

PICTURES 17 THROUGH 21

The Front Bumper is a plastic chromed part with a metal liner to which some later parts will fit.

PRODUCT ALERT: The rotating number plate is another slight disappointment.

The BMT registration is cast as raised letters on the number plate nut the LU and 4711 registrations are just applied to the part (as it arrives) as stickers and in my parts the LU sticker has been poorly applied.

These 2 parts are again stored away to some future time.

PART 003

In Parts set 3 we get

BONNET

PRODUCT ALERT – Oh my “Giddy Aunt” what can I say – this part is terrible.

PICTURES 22 THROUGH 24

This part again suffers the “prop me up and let the varnish dry” drip line.

Worse than that however is the overall finish. I am not sure if when the bonnet is up it has some sort of “blanket” liner but if not just look at pictures 23 and 24 – don’t think they need further explanation do they?

PARTS 004

In Parts Set 4 we get

Oil Cap
Cylinder Head
Fan
Fan Belt
Fan Housing

PICTURES 25 & 26

Again, none of these parts are used at this point.

PRODUCT ALERT – Again as can be seen in picture 26 the paint finish is far from perfect with numerous inclusions in the painted/varnished surface

PARTS 006

In Parts 6 we get

Drivers Wing Mirror
Weapons Drawer
Roof Panel

PICTURES 28 THROUGH 31

Again, nothing used in the section.

While I could assemble the weapons tray, chances are this goes back with the roof section so that part of the build on hold.

PICTURES 32 THROUGH 36

PRODUCT ALERT: Another “Oh my God” moment with the roof panel.

I never even bother photographing the underside as the paint finish is terrible.

But as to the top surface I think the pictures again show the issues with the finish on this part.

Also, when the part is on a flat surface putting a finger top right and one bottom left the part rocks indicating its not level. Not that maybe because of how it follows the shape of the roof but who knows.

SUMMARY

So, all in all very very very disappointed with this first pack. It seems to me that all of the Body parts in their BLACK card packs have paint finish faults and I am certainly not prepared to built the car using these parts.

Contemplating a cancellation of this one but will wait until I try and get some sense from their customer services tomorrow. Crying

Sadly, not sounding promising.
The original release was full of problems and it has been hoped this new version has sorted it.
Maybe not...

Oh dear. I will unpack my parts tonight and see what they look like.I have 2 sets of parts for some reason.I had subscribed last year and when it was released i called and they told me I didnt need to resub, but then they sent me 2 sets of parts??

I am on a FB group for the DB5 and there have been quite a few people posting with poor paint jobs and parts not fitting.Apparently the radiator doesnt attach to the bumper as it should and there are other errors in the instructions.

I will post after I have looked at my parts.Hopefully you were just unlucky Tony, but it is not a good start.

If I continue I will be making some parts .The license plate is a very easy fix and I suspect people like Mike Lane may already be making aftermarket ones, but the paint job is going to put a lot of people off.I have no issue stripping and repainting, but I suspect many people will not want to do that

Carl

I am so disappointed. Missed this the first time and like many thought "they are bound to have sorted the issues this time".

On something like this I just want to fit it all together without having to resort to a major repaint.

Its interesting that all of the duff parts are on different background colour cards so wondering if they are using up old stock.

Eitherway a calll tomorrow to customer services but not holding out much hope as trying to get delivery dates from them met with a total blank.

The paintwork really is that bad it looks like "i have painted it". Its certainly not been done in aprofessional paint shop. And parts are flooded with varnish which has pooledwere the part has been proppedup to dry.

Hope your parts are in a better state of finish.

Tony
