Having just laid my quarter deck I am ready to start thinking about the cabin partitions, and the thought is... start again!! In part 1 of this scratch build upgrade I will tackle the strip of wood that forms the rear partition. I wanted to bring that to life and it is really easy to do. The real partition contains 5 windows and two doors with 4 pillars. To get all this to fit the windows need to be 8mm wide and 9mm deep, the space between each window is 3mm. my windows have started 4mm down form the top edge. begin by marking out the 3mm wide spaces then add the top and bottom lines for the windows. next mark out a 2mm deep strip for the top of the panel then 5mm strip for the panel leaving 1-2mm at the bottom I cut our the windows next using the same technique to cut out the gun ports. The next step was the 4 pillars. I used 2x5mm wood. the pillar goes from the top of the window to the deck. First trim the wood down to 3mm wide and cut to length (this will vary depending on how much you have had to adjust you partition height) then mark out 2mm from the top and the bottom. make a .5mm razor saw cut along the line you marked out and with a sharp knife cut the middle section down to 1.5 thick Then glue in place one at each end and one on the other side of the first window on each side, this frames the doors. to make the panels look real I needed to skin the front of the partition. using spare 1x5mm wood I glued a strip across the top of the pillars 4mm deep next I did the two center gaps between the three middle windows I then cut the 5 panels to length from the 1x5mm wood and tapered the edges as per the magazine. next I cut a 2mm strip from the 1x5mm wood and cut to length fixing them above and below each panel. finally a 2mm strip was fixed at the top. easy hey! and there is enough spare acetate provided to glaze them. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Hi Jase! Nice work! Good to see another enhancement of another key area. A little info mate the magazine has the cabin fitted a bit to fair forward when you cut the gun ports on the quarter deck the side of the 3rd gun port from the timberheads is right next to the cabin and the cannon blocks the door. Hi Jase I also looked at your pictures but my skills do not stretch that far to work with such small parts. Keen to see the end product. Keep up the good work. Darron I also wonder about the position of the partition and the cannon. I also question the position of the ship wheel against the mast where does the helmsman stand. Looking at the plan supplied with Jase's packs the distance between the cannon and the partition is roughly the width of the cannon. To allow more space between the cannon and the partition I am going to fit the crossbeam with the cutout facing forward which results in more space between the cannon and partition. Happy building Athol

Happy building Athol Your absolutely right the partition is to far forward it needs to be where the deck support is. the position of the wheel to the mast looks correct. the wheel should be forward of the line of the partitions and nearly hard against the mast. I am going to move my partition back and see how it all works. doing that will also crate more space for the companionway to the admirals dining cabin which i intend to add “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Nice pics matey!! i am assuming DeAg have got the walk ways?! I may have to put an extra beam in place to support the deck if i am moving the cabins back. working on the side pieces at the moment the measurements are the same so there will be standard window sizes throughout “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Jase I am developing a new ships wheel and binnicle. The present ships wheel is to small and does not have enough rungs. Side partition is made in the same was as above although there are some subtle changes... Its probably worth noting you will have to make some new blanks to replace the partitions supplied The side panel has three pillars and a door. The measurements are the same so beginning from the left mark out 3mm wide for the first pillar then 8mm for the window. repeat this another two times so you have three windows, this is where it changes. mark out 3mm for the pillar then 2mm for the door edge, next 8mm for the window this will leave 5mm at the end. make all your panels and pillars as before. see pic below for position reference and the Quarter deck detail pack. On the end pillar that is 5 mm wide make as the other two and then trim the top and bottom bosses back to 3mm wide this will leave a 2mm area for constructing the cabin area. The door Handel was simply made with a planking pin “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Now the small partition. (starboard side) First take your blank and mark from right to left as follows: 2mm, 3mm, 8mm, 3mm, 8mm this will leave 4mm approx on the left side. Then from the top mark out as follows: 4mm, 9mm, 2mm, 5mm, 2mm having marked out the partition cut out the window. Once done make the two pillars as before and glue in place. next make the three panels (I had to make the 8mm x 9mm panel in two pieces)once they are glued and dried skin the rest of the partition with 1mm thick strip as before. Note I have not added a Handel as there is not one on the real ship (see detail pack) I am going to be repositioning my cabin further back which will be shown in my build diary. those of you with a detail pack will note there is an arch in front of partitions that is not in our kit i will be adding this also. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain
