Many thanks for looking in.

I must admit i was surprised by just how much they have packed into this area and it does not stop because issue 7 will have use doing even more on the engine.

Part works are “funny” in that you get a mailing with lots to do and then one were you do next to nothing.

This one would keep anyone very busy. Especially those that really want to go to town with extra detailing.

So far happy with the parts and the assembly so its looking promising that i will continue with this one. The next 4 editions will be the final test as at that point if i cancel at least i have not gone to far into the build.

But looking at what i finished up with so far i am quite pleased with it.

Tony

HACHETTE SPITFIRE Mk 1A – SATURDAY 02nd May 2020

Hope this latest update finds everyone well and managing to cope with such a life change to what we had just a few months ago.

My editions to all of the partworks I have on the go appear to be arriving without and undue delays so for that I am grateful.

Last week I received issues 7 through 10 of this one but as I am still working today has been the first chance of putting the parts together.

Its interesting to see that all 4 editions are devoted to adding additional details to the engine, and I have surprised at just how much detail they are packing in.

With this mailing we also receive the first binder for the collection, this one arriving as a “Free Gift” but ongoing these will be charged.

ISSUE 7 – ENGINE SUPERCHRGER AND DETAILS

PARTS CHECKLIST – PICTURE 1

7-01 Supercharger Cover
7-02 Supercharger Cover
7-03 Back of the Supercharger
7-04 Tank Tubing
7-05 Supercharger Detail
7-06 Supercharger Detail
7-07 Supercharger Detail

PICTURES 2 & 3

We start with the 2 halves of the super charger and being all metal these have to be glued with superglue.

Picture 2 highlights some of the really detail they have incorporated into these parts with nicely scaled bolt heads as can be seen here.

We do not want to overdo it with the superglue so just need to apply it to the 3 arrowed holes shown in picture 3.

PICTURES 4 & 5

We take this assembled part and to this add the Supercharger Back. Again, gluing this carefully into place using superglue.

PICTURE 6

We then need the tank tubing and base section.

PICTURES 7 & 8

The tubing is glued into place on the base and the base is then glued to the supercharger.

PICTURES 9 & 10

We then take the supercharger pipe and applying superglue just to the holes (pic 10) we join these 2 halves together.

PICTURES 11, 12 & 13

The fit of this pipe into the supercharger was hampered by the paint layer on both mating surfaces so a quick going with a small file resolved that and the pipe could be glued into place.

ISSUE 8 – DETAILS FOR THE SUPERCHARGER

PARTS CHECKLIST – PICTURE 14

8-01 Supercharger Backing
8-02 Supercharger Backing
8-03 Base of Backing
8-04 Supercharger Details A – D
8-05 Supercharger Details E – K
8-06 Supercharger Pipe Detail
8-07 Supercharger Hose Detail

PICTURES 15 & 16

We start by gluing together the 2 parts of the Supercharger Backing. Again, metal parts so superglue required in this case.

Once set we then take this and glue it to the backing base part.

PICTURES 17 Through 22

Taking the 2 plastic frets we start to assemble the small details parts that can be seen in this range of pictures.

Being plastic, we can put these together using styrene cement rather than superglue.

PICTURES 23 & 24

Back to the superglue we start putting these small detail parts into place on the supercharger.

PICTURES 25 & 26

Next part is to glue the supercharger backing to the main supercharger assemble.

PICTURES 27, 28, 29, 30 & 31

We complete the supercharger assembly in this section by gluing into place some of the remaining details.

PICTURE 32

The last of the details from the silver fret get glued into place on the engine cylinder head as shown here.

ISSUE 9 – DETAILS FOR THE ENGINE AND SUPERCHARGER

PARTS CHECKLIST – PICTURE 33

9-01 Engine Top Cover (left)
9-02 Engine Top Cover (right)
9-03 Engine Pipe (right)
9-04 Engine Pipe (left)
9-05 Pipe (top)
9-06 Pipe (lower)
9-07 Frame with Supercharger details A – D
9-08 Coolant Pipe
9-09 Coolant Pipe
9-10 Coolant Pipe
9-11 Coolant Pipe

PICTURE 34

We start with the two pipe halves and these are carefully glued together using superglue.

PICTURE 35

Next up are the engine top covers and pipes and we make 2 sub-assemblies using these parts.

PICTURES 36 & 37

Talking these 2 sub-assemblies and the pipe we join these parts together using superglue.

PICTURE 38

We then remove all 4 parts from the supercharger detail frame and as these are plastic, glue together, making 2 sub-assemblies, with styrene glue.

PICTURE 39

These 2 parts are then glued into place onto the supercharger.

Its worth noting that removing these parts from the fret does leave some missing paint.

Depending on just how visible this is on the final assemble I may need to touch in with some silver paint.

PICTURES 40 & 41

The first of 4 coolant pipes are now glued into place.

What is nice with these is they are made of a soft “vinyl” material so are very flexible and easy to install.

PICTURES 42 & 43

Time to bring 2 more assemblies together, in this case the super charger and the engine block.

This is all getting quite weighty now as the majority of the parts are metal.

PICTURE 44

The Pipe and engine top covers is then slide into place.

Fit of this is quite loose and noted in the instructions which mentions this will be held in place as further parts are added in a later part of the build.

PICTURES 45 Through 49

The final part of this stage is to fit the remaining coolant pipes.

Again, these are flexible vinyl so fit easily with any minor adjustment being made possible by the flexibility of the parts.

ISSUE 10 – FITTING EXHAUSTS AND OTHER DETAILS

PARTS CHECKLIST – PICTURE 50

10-01 Exhaust (L1)
10-02 Exhaust (L2)
10-03 Exhaust (L3)
10-04 Exhaust (R1)
10-05 Exhaust (R2)
10-06 Exhaust (R3)
10-07 Connecting Pipes
10-08 Connecting Pipes
10-09 Pump

PICTURES 51, 52 & 53

First off, we take the pump and glue this into place into the hole on the bottom of the engine sump.

The two pipes that come from the pump are then glued into the holes under each cylinder head as arrowed in picture 53.

PICTURES 54, 55 & 56

Next up we install the spark plug components.

We start by gluing these either side of the engine onto the supports as arrowed in Picture 56.

When set we then glue each plug into the corresponding hole on the cylinder head.

PICTURES 57 & 58

Its then onto the exhaust parts with 3 components making up each exhaust section.

As the instructions point out its really import to identify the parts correctly.

PICTURE 59

The 3 sections are the glued into place either side of the engine. These went in without any adjustments being required.

PICTURE 60

That completes this stage and here you can see the parts we can look forward to in stage 11.

More components to detail the engine it seems.

PICTURES 61 Through 65

I mention at the start of this update just how detailed the engine is becoming – a real surprise to me as it did not look like this in the promotional pictures they used when launching this partwork.

So, to finish off here are a few pictures of just how the engine is looking at the end of stage 10.

Until the next time Stay Happy, Stay Safe.

Steve/Gray

Many thanks.

Its certainly surprised me with the amount of detail they have put into the engine.

My only “worry” is dropping the thing because if that happens its going to be a disaster as superglue (not at all a favourite of mine) cements rather than welds.

HACHETTE SPITFIRE Mk 1A – SATURDAY 30th May 2020

Issues 11, 12, 13 and 14 have arrived.

Some attention required this time as there is a correction printed in issue 11 and also a callout in issue 14 regarding the supplied screws (hope this is not going to be a common issue ongoing.

Anyhow on with the latest build stages:

ISSUE 11 – WORKING ON OIL PIPES AND THE NOSE FRAME

PARTS CHECKLIST – PICTURE 9

11-01 Oil Pipe
11-02 End of Oil Pipe
11-03 Frame with oil pipe connectors
11-04 Pipe Connections
11-05 Copper Pipe
11-06 Copper Pipe
11-07 Front Frame (right)
11-08 Rear Frame
11-09 Front Frame (Left)
11-10 Rear Frame

PICTURES 1 through 4

We start with the correction issued with is pack. It appears that part of the engine support was omitted from an earlier stage so in this correction we retro-fit the bracket.

PICTURES 6, 7 & 8

We start by removing the 2 rear screws holding the motor housing in place.

The engine support bracket is then fitted and screwed into place with the 2 longer screws supplied with the bracket.

Pic 7 and Pic 8 we are told how to route the cable from the motor.

PICTURES 10, 11, 12 & 13

We first off have to make up the oil pipe. Quite a fiddly assembly.

Pic 10 when cutting these oil pipe connectors from the fret we need to ensure the part is removed correctly leaving a small plug at the end when will get glued into the engine top.

Pic 12 each of the connectors has to be cut so that they can be fitted around the oil pipe.

Pic 13 one thing to watch for is the fact that on the fret the pipe connectors do not follow a “1, 2, 3” sequence so when installing these onto the oil pipe it important to make sure you are working with the correct part.

PICTURES 14 & 15

The oil pipe is then superglued in place on the engine top.

The oil pipe connectors are glued in turn into the holes on the engine block.

Really small areas to work on and its showing me I need to book a sight test when its safe to do so.

PICTURES 16 & 17

To finish off this section we install the left and right front frame sections. This was fun trying to line everything up and keeping it all in place.

What I did notice with one of these parts is that the paint finish is not very good. It appears the metal part was not primed and as such I managed to flake off some of the paint, but luckily on the inside of the part so it will not be seen.

ISSUE 12 – TESTING THE PROPELLOR AND FITTING A PANEL

PARTS CHECKLIST – PICTURE 18

12-01 Engine Bearer
12-02 Circuit Board
12-03 Battery Box
12-04 Four 2 x 4mm PM Screws (1 spare)

PICTURE 19

Nothing difficult here. Just 1 screw to remove, slide the panel back and insert 3 x AA batteries.

PICTURE 20

The Circuit board is a simple affair. It has a pass-through connection from Battery to motor.

For later use it has a socket for the LED and that connection passes through an onboard resistor. (just as an aside one of the issues the Bismarck builders have had were some tried to test the leds through the battery box prior to the circuit board appearing and ended up blowing some of the led parts).

PICTURE 21

Simple connector motor lead and battery box lead and all being well the propeller should start spinning. In my case a success and all works just fine.

Another point however is that if you did receive a duff motor at this stage its going to be very difficult to remove it from the sections already assembled.

PICTURES 22 & 23

We finish this section by screwing into place a further panel – in this case the Engine Bearer.

Because there was no clear direction in this stage as to how the motor lead should be routed, I put it underneath the panel.

In the next issue it does appear to be routed above so what you see in this picture does get changed.
