Hello all,

As this year will be the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the world's first atom bomb on Hiroshima in Japan, I've decided to build a model of the famous B-29 Superfortress that dropped that bomb, namely the 'Enola Gay'.

The kit I'm using is the Academy release #12528 that is specifically dedicated to both of the aircraft that dropped the atom bombs on Hiroshima (Enola Gay) 6th August 1945 and also on Nagasaki (Bockscar) three days later on 9th August 1945. It's a nicely detailed kit with some nicely recessed panel lines and a good level of detail and which also includes scale replicas of both of the atom bombs used on those two missions - the 'Little Boy' (Hiroshima) and the 'Fat Man' (Nagasaki). Some nice quality 'Cartograph' decals are also included in the kit. To enhance the kit a little more I'm making use of Eduard's PE set, 'Scale Aircraft Conversions' white metal landing gear, replacement resin wheels from 'Radial Engines & Wheels 72', and a set of Eduard Masks. To finish the model in it's distinctive 'Natural Metal Finish' (NMF) I will be using a combination of 'Alclad 2' metallic paints and some real metal foil using ordinary kitchen foil. I have a couple of useful reference books to help me with this build.

An example of my Airfix 1:72 P-51D Mustang (Tuskegee Red Tail), which was finished using the same foiling technique can be found here:

https://forum.model-spac...spx?g=posts&t=17481

Information and facts about the two missions can be found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org..._Gay#Nagasaki_mission_2

I hope that you will follow my build and I welcome all comments and criticisms. First progress report should follow in the next day or two.

Kev,

I am sure you already know this but the Enola Gay is on complete display at the Air and Space Museum, Dulles Field, Washington, DC. Bock's Car is at the US Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Field. They are very imposing aircraft and well preserved. Have you ever tried Bare Metal Foil?

Well finally I have managed to get some work done on this after a fortnight of nothing but fulfilling my work commitments! Apologies to anyone who was waiting to see my first progress report!

The photos below will show what I've done so far, which is to start where most aircraft kits begin, with the cockpit assemblies. This kit is ok but it's a little soft on details in most areas, so I've added some Eduard etch parts and some scratchbuilt details to the cockpit to push it up a level. The two etch side consoles are added to correct a glaring omission by Academy in as much as they didn't even provide any! To strengthen the folded etch I packed the insides with bits of plastic card. The gaps that you see in the layers when viewed from the outside won't be seen when the fuselage sides are closed up later. The filler on both the commander and co-pilots' seats is to correct a fault in the cushion design. They were one piece in reality whereas the kit had them moulded as a separate backrest and headrest. Still quite a bit more to add to the cockpit yet and some of the parts that you see below aren't permanently fixed yet to facilitate easier painting. The penny shot gives an idea of how small these 1:72 cockpits are!

Many thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed.
