Good evening from 'The Dockyard' and I hope you're all well?

Progress has been a little slow of late, but I can now reveal the completed 'repair job' suffered by depth charges aka the oven!Flapper LOL

In my last post i had applied the embossed rivet and weld line decals supplied by Archers Transfers in the USA.

The next job was to spray paint the area with Life Color 'Dunkelgrau 52'. This shade closely resembles the paint used on u-boats and almost looks black from the right angle.

Several coats were applied in quick succession, leaving about 1/2 hour between coats before letting it cure for a few days.

During this stage I did come across areas of filler that stood proud and this had to be sanded back and the area 'patched in' with paint. Obviously not the done thing for an immaculate smooth finish, but on a submarine project like this where there is plenty of weathering, the slight variations in paint layers enhanced the look I think.

The next step was to then apply a liberal coating of black pin wash all over the repaired area. This was then removed using many cotton buds and thinners so that the pin wash remained only on the rivet heads, weld lines and natural joins.

I didn't document this stage with photos, however, it took the longest time to achieve the desired effect; close to two weeks.

When this was done it was time to apply the 'algae weathering wash' from Ultimate Modelling Products.

This was liberally applied with a wide, flat brush and left to dry. When dry it can literally be rubbed away, which was great for blending it into the surrounding areas. It was then sealed with several coats of Humbrol acrylic matt varnish. I love this matt varnish as it dries in less than 2 mins. Fab!

Once varnished, the algae wash takes on a slightly darker tone, which is great when it sits next to the algae wash on the water line, which is left unvarnished, giving that brighter, algae colour.

I have yet to do this small job and will go all around the U-boat hull waterline during the final stages of this project.

That concludes this weeks update and also concludes the repair job!Flapper

I've been debating whether to continue fitting the rudders, propellers and diving planes to the hull, but then decided against it and to continue fitting out the compartments to reduce the risk of damage to these parts while i'm moving the U-boat around.

Thanks for looking in, stay safe and happy modelling!BigGrin

Regards,
Phil W.

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'.

This week I've been back to fitting out the aft torpedo compartment, concentrating on making a rack of pressure gauges for the air compressor.

To make the rack I used 0.5mm styrene sheet cut to 10mm x 7mm. I then fixed the support bars to it made from 1.5mm x 1.0mm styrene strip and painted it all flat white.
