R2-D2's battery box has protection circuitry that will ensure the cells are only drained at the correct rate and also has overcharge protection circuitry. It is therefore important to only use unprotected batteries only. Placing protected batteries in could be detrimental to the R2’s circuitry and may affect its functionality’s or failure to operate.

Protected cells simply wouldnt fit as they are slightly longer due to the protection circuit. Plus as mentioned the battery box already contains the necessary protection built into its circuits

Checked at one of the big battery supplies here for unprotected lithium ion batteries and they are not allowed to sell them here, they must all be protected one, so just what will happen if I put protected ones in r2d2???

Jaycar are selling the 18650 button top / unprotected battery and will ship within Oz.

Not there yet as only up to issue 80 here in Adelaide, but will probably drop into jaycar and purchase mine next month.
