Hi Ronald, I believe the mark what the instruction mentions is only there to make sure that during the bending/trying/bending/trying process you always align the plank at the same (e.g. the forward edge of the rib) location. Once you happy with the bend and it nicely follows the stern then you can cut the forward end of this plank to size. I hope it helps. Happy building! Hi Ronald hold the plank in position then where the plank passes over the front edge of rib 30 this is where you make the Mark. This is also where the sharp bend should begin. ok thanks Nightwisher I wish you had a name, but anyway are you talking about the mark I cycled in photo in part 7 or the side view of the stern where you off 25MM from the end of the plank, if you are referring the mark I cycled and where the edge of the angled cut is. how do I locate that mark. thank you Ronald

Oh yeah I didn't even notice that Mark I don't think it's anything to do with the instructions. I did draw some lines on my stern at equal distances from the middle to try and keep the planks symmetrical. ok thanks Tom may I ask how many planks did you use to get to the the false keel, I saw 9 or 10 in the instructions Alan had 8 when he did the Victory, but anyway I just want get the first stern plank right this time that is why I am asking everyone about the mysteries mark at corner of the stern above the bent plank plank I might do that my self on a angle just like the direction of the planks Ronald

Hi Ron, personally I wouldn't worry too much about the marks in the instructions as all builds are different. Just get the first plank going around the stern right and all the other planks will follow. Also the planks very in with ,plus or minus a tiny bit so some people will get to the kell in 8 and some in 10 and so on . Hope this helps Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Hi Martyn yes it did thanks I notice that now and I will not worry about the mark on the back side of the stern any more it's wasting some valuable time Ronald

Ronald I got to the keel with my eighth plank here's a pic not my best work but I'm not too bothered about being neat below the waterline as I plan on copper tiling . nightwisher attached the following image(s): Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

I got the twist by holding the plank over the spout of a boiling kettle holding the short end with pliers( hot steam hurts),gently induce the twist you can usually feel the wood soften as you twist, remove the plank from the steam but keep holding the plank in the twisted position until it cools down for a few seconds . When cool it should hold it's shape. ok thanks Tom will try again tomorrow for some reason my planks keep splitting at the ends some how I can get the bend right but when I start to twist it starts splitting also I never know where to cut the angle at but then I looked at the photo you sent me and notice the angle cut is right at the bend, and also I notice Alan's bend and twist and bends in his build video on you tube looks a lot different and easier then the instructions do and he makes using the crimpers easy foe which I have trouble with over the iron your thought P.S.- I will look in to getting a kettle Ronald

Hi Ron . If you go through the planks pick out the ones that seem more flexible by gentley bending them in your hands as some of the planks are stiffer than others. Next . Look at the plank and see how straight the grain is as you want it to run the whole length and not go to one side. I would start the bend about 3 inches from the end by steaming and soaking and gentley bending into shape. It takes time but gets there in the end. Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . yes thanks Martyn I saw something like that about the grain in the planks somewhere in the forum and will go thought them and locate and separate the ones with a straighter grain or the most flexible ones

Hi tom I have been studying your photo especially the first stern plank, I thought I almost had it but NO I do have a question though. where do you make the angle cut to fit against the galley and the stern or transom thank you PS- since I do not own a steam kettle what would be my other options I tried soaking the planks in hot water but not to long or should I soak them for 12 hours like I did before but it did help any, I'm even trying Alans idea by use the iron and crimpers but I notice I get much better results using the blade side instead so anyway there you have it. I was thinking that I am not making the bend enough so it would say the L shape so I can concentrate on the angle and twist when it's time and with out having to use pins to hold it in place, Ronald

You can go to the local Goodwill/Salvation Army type store and pick up used kettles for a couple of bucks. It would be a worthwhile investment towards completing your build.

Hello Ronald just got in from work and saw your post. Sorry go hear your still having trouble with this part of the build, I have never used a crimper so I can't offer anything on that one. As for the angle cut I made the bend And twist first then just kept trimming bits off the end and trying it against the frame until I got a nice fit. As for soaking the wood in my humble opinion once it's soaked for a couple of hours it ain't gonna get any wetter. Here's a few more pics hope they help. nightwisher attached the following image(s): Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

ok thanks Tom for more photos that is what I am talking about your first stern plank looks so neat and the ends are not splitting like mine do, will try just the iron this time and also try to bend the plank a tad more inward so it will stay in L shape or almost like a wider V shape so I can work on the angle and twist as I mentioned before Ronald
