I've got ANOTHER 1/8 Edai Lotus 72... If you can call it that. It's a box of VERY badly half-built bits. It seems that the original builder wanted to paint the model orange. (Gunston race team?) But then, the next owner tried to paint over the orange to make it black again. THEN - the next owner started to remove all the paint... A large amount of the engine has been put together - badly. I 'think' most of the kit is still present. I'm going to try to bring this old girl back from the grave. Fingers crossed.  roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Right... First job was to soak all the major parts in oven cleaner overnight (2 doses, 2 nights) to remove the VERY heavy black gloss brush painted layer, and the orange spray coat underneath. As the parts are STILL soaking, tomorrow will tell. The engine ad gearbox assemblies were cut apart - FAR too much glue to try breaking them apart. Again, paint stripper followed by a clean up, primer and then ally silver and matt black. The engine block and gearbox look better already. On we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Thanks for peeping in Ken. After 48 hours - 3 doses of Mr Muscle, the paint is almost all gone. The parts will get a wet sanding with 800 grit and then some primer so I can see what the surfaces are actually like. Many of the larger assemblies have been broken down now. The rear suspension parts were solidly glued together - wrongly. I had to cut them apart, re-drill holes and make new mounting pins from thick copper wire before putting it all back together again. This is going to be the Team Walker Graham Hill car so air vents have had to be cut into the nose section. On we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Thanks for looking in Phil. After an AGE of sanding and stripping the black and orange layers of paint, it's looking a little more healthy. The body still needs several more layers of blue, and a really good polishing. I did manage to cut and sort the extra front vents the Graham Hill car has so that's a little task sorted. Major engine/gearbox parts all dismantled, cleaned up, reassembled and painted. Here's hoping it turns out ok in the end. Still a LONG way to go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Many thanks for looking in chaps. I've masked the tub and sprayed the interior in ally silver. There was no way I could get the main tub parts apart without breaking things so I've tried to work around it. Decals are now drawn up and printed for future use. Rear suspension parts are very badly broken so they will probably be next on the list for attention. roymattblack attached the following image(s):

More on the poor old Lotus. The rear suspension parts have been repaired. Many of the struts were broken and had to be drilled and pinned to get the parts back together before repainting them. Time consuming, but finally sorted. Similarly, the injectors and velocity stacks were very badly assembled and parts broken. Again, a lot of cleaning up and repairs but now finally fitted back onto the engine. The exhaust manifolds are causing a headache at the moment though. One side is VERY firmly glued together but at least in the correct shape. It will be drilled and pinned to the engine after a clean up and repaint. The other side is a different kettle of fish. Despite all kinds of cleaning up, the plastic parts will NOT glue together. Poly cement, Superglue, even thick PVA - no good. It seems almost as if the plastic has deteriorated in some way and adhesives just won't bond it. It looks like a case of drill and pin each component to the engine and then do the same with the 4-point connector after that. On we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Thanks for looking in chaps. Yes, it's a bit of a mission but it's actually great fun trying to work out how to fix broken parts back together, and seeing something half decent emerging from a box of scrap. The exhaust pipes were drilled and each one pinned and painted. Locating holes were drilled into the broken off stub-ends left on the engine and then the pipes fitted and glued. The tape was to keep all four branches in the correct position for later fitting of the adaptor. Gaps were filled and have yet to be painted matt black. The front cradle was a total mess. Almost every part had the fixing pins or location tabs broken off meaning most of it had to be pinned for fixing. Everything was broken apart, cleaned up as best as possible and then carefully reassembled. Once painted ally silver and the brakes fitted, it's looking a good bit better. More on the wreck... The engine/gearbox has been sorted and some wiring etc added. I decided to go with red plug leads for no other reason than a bit of colour. The front cradle and rear parts are now fixed to the body and the dashboard is in. The whole thing is heading on the home straight now... roymattblack attached the following image(s):
