Hi all I've been a forum member for a couple of months and have been lurking in the background, so this is my first post, please be gentle. I subscribed to the HMS Surprise build on the 28 month schedule and got bored of waiting for delivery, so in the meantime I purchased from Ebay the complete AL kit of Endeavours long boat. This is my first foray into ship building but have done OO trains (I have an 18 ft x 8 ft layout in my loft), RC cars and various plastic kits, predominantly Tamiya military vehicles. Anyway, here are a couple of pics of my longboat, work is ongoing. I'll update some earlier pics later of the hull construction etc. Your comments are very welcome! Astronut

Ger Thanks for your kind comments. I'm really enjoying the model. I had a couple of problems: 1). The instructions state that the the masts are 4mm dia dowels, however only 3mm dowels were included in the kit. I've seen others have made the same comment elsewhere. I did buy some 4mm dowels, but stuck with the 3mm in the end. 2). The instructions are not too bad generally although the mast rigging instructions are a bit short I think. Ended up mimicking the photo. Other than that, no real problems. I ended up painting mine, in my own scheme. I hope to have some more pics to upload later showing the earlier stages of the build. Some more pics: My first attempt at planking. I soaked the planks in hot water first for about 20 minutes and held in place overnight before gluing. More planking. There were more than enough planks in the kit, quite a few left over. First layer of planking complete. As it is double planked, i decided to add a bit of filler, before sanding, just to ensure the hull was completely smooth.

Another couple: Modelling the oars. I painted these too. Mast tops. The issue with these were that 3mm dia dowels were in the kit, whereas the instructions stated 4mm. I stuck with them though. Once again, I painted the masts. Preparing to make the jibs. Astro

Thanks Ger The hardest thing I found about this kit was the faring of the frames. Not that it was hard to make, but it was hard to accept after spending all that money on the kit then to take a file to the laser cut parts seemed alien to me!
